Gas fire removal

We want to get our floors redone, and we have an old gas fire sitting around looking awful that needs to go. We're fairly but not 100% certain it's been disconnected from the gas. Do we need to get a gas person in first to have a look at it before a builder will touch it? Will the builder want some sort of certification?

Help! I'm terrible at hiring people to do stuff so I need this laid out in easy steps...

I’d get a Gas Safe registered person in to check, remove and cap it off. You can show the builder the receipt with the Gas Safe registration on it.
Alternatively, let your builder know - they might have a gas engineer they regularly work with and can contract them to have a look and do anything that needs doing.

I don't have a builder! That's half the problem right there...

But thank you. Gas Safe receipt, check.

I’d be tempted to get it removed and piping capped etc then before you ask any builders for quotes. It shouldn’t be a huge job.

The added benefit of this is that it will improve your EPC rating.

I had mine capped off when I had a new boiler fitted took all of 20
minutes and cost around £150. I’d book a gas man in to check it out and cap if needed worse case scenario it does best case he’s got an easy job. They also got rid of my old gas fire for me and removed safely
