Has anyone installed built in wardrobes?

Hi, thinking of having built in wardrobes put in our bedroom but have no idea of cost. I realise it's "how long is a piece of string" depending on size, interior fittings etc, but has anyone had this done and can give me a ball park figure?

We'd be looking at a run of wardrobes 2.5 metres long, in a very regular shaped room - no tricky angles. I could get quotes but we've got a strict budget of £3k so if its likely to be a lot more than that, then we'll wait and save up

TIA

I literally just got quotes for this the other day!

I was quoted £1000 plus VAT

0021andabit · 20/07/2023 12:08

(That’s for one built in wardrobe - in I think a slightly smaller space than yours)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/07/2023 12:17

Thanks, that's interesting. I thought it might be a lot more, and therefore not worth getting quotes until we've got more money.

I paid about £5000 to have built in wardrobes either side of a firebreast (you know, typical bedroom configuration). But he was a first class carpenter, he did the shelving and hanging rails to my specification and spray painted the wardrobes inside and out before assembling it. I think I paid about £3500 for a straight run of 2m, three doors below and three doors storage to same spec. The doors hang perfectly - after daily use for two years this is how one cupboard still looks (door knob slightly askew is my fault).

I have used sliderobes a few times and always been pleased. Not cheap but sturdy and long lasting. I have no idea how much I paid but this was a while back.

I think there are different experiences based on the local reps and workers though. Not all positive reviews.

I am paying around £2k to have wardrobes fitted in alcoves either side of a bedroom firebreast. I'm using a Carpentar who installed shelving in our front room, very pleased with his work.

Built in wardrobes look great, we had them in our previous house, but when we moved we all needed new wardrobes, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets etc this would put me off buying built-in, in the future tbh, all great until you move.

minipie · 21/07/2023 14:45

I don’t have a figure but we saved a fair bit of money by getting all the carcasses and inside fittings from Ikea (Pax/Platsa) and then getting a joiner to make bespoke doors and filler strips/plinths to make them built in. As well as miney saving, we liked all the Pax options and the fact the internal layout can all be adjusted if we want to later.

Africa2go · 21/07/2023 16:12

Exactly as Minipie says - had IKEA PAX wardrobe frames across a 3.5m wall and internal fittings - ours needed to be "hacked" to accommodate sloping ceiling, increase the height slightly and odd measurements, we had a joiner do that, and then we bought bespoke sized doors from an online company. Wasn't cheap but considerably less than some of the quotes we had.

TizerorFizz · 21/07/2023 19:43

Is this to be fitted into an alcove or just a run? Bespoke fitted into a precise space is always more. Finish makes a big difference to price and how much adjustment is needed to fit the space. Plus do you want lots of hanging/drawers etc? The cheapest option is to make a frame for sliding doors and build hanging into the wardrobe but that’s fairly basic. We have had quite a few over the years built into spaces at varying price points! DD had Elstra from John Lewis with an end panel. So not built into an alcove. Good wardrobes though.

trulyunruly01 · 21/07/2023 19:47

I had a 2.7m straight run, floor to ceiling, sliding doors, hanging space and shelves fitted last July for £2,300. Took a day. In Kent. This company has done 3 of my bedrooms, the first 10 yrs ago and it still looks as good as the day it was installed.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/07/2023 19:52

It's just a straight run, no alcoves. I want floor to ceiling, but we have very high ceilings.

@Africa2go where did your doors come from pls?

MillWood85 · 21/07/2023 20:13

We replaced ours under insurance as the water tank in the loft leaked. We went for Hammonds who were very enthusiastic at the design stage but then it took 4 visits to fit... and I'm not really overly impressed. I've got lots of very random small slotted spaces that neither handbags or shoes fit into, and I can barely reach the top rail for my clothes. DH is fine with his as he's well over 6 feet tall. They look great though, and I love the design/colour... it's the functioning part that's not the best.

I'd suggest being very very careful about how the interior is laid out!

TizerorFizz · 21/07/2023 20:34

You can get rails that pull down with a handle. We have high ceilings in a Victorian flat. The advantage of that is getting drawers underneath or two tier rails. Storage above high rails is impossible to reach. Also drawers are better than shelves where you cannot see what’s at the back.

Africa2go · 21/07/2023 21:56

@watersprites we got them from here https://kitchenandbedroomdoors.co.uk/wardrobe-doors.asp - think it's 6 years now since we had them put in and they still look new, still properly aligned etc. We've done the same in another bedroom too. There are more companies that do similar - have a look too at Foxstow Shaker Doors and Plykea.

these people are great. We found it cheaper to order from these people and then get a carpenter to fit. Price will depend on if they are pre painted, how many internal drawers/shelves etc. a straight wardrobe run is relatively cheap.

it’s a good idea to play with their planner, as it shows how the price can build and allows you to adjust.

as the product is sent to fit the exact space, it doesn’t take that long to fit. Mine was fitted by db, who took a day (six hours)

We had something similar done not long ago and went with Blenheim Bedrooms. They specialise in fitted wardrobes and were great to deal with — no pushy sales, and the quality really stood out compared to others we looked at. Ours was around 3m and came in just under £3k, so your budget might actually be doable depending on the range and interior layout you choose.

Geranium1984 · 24/04/2025 13:47

We had just over 2m of bespoke wardrobes installed in our bedroom and it was just over 3k. This includes 2 pull out shoe racks, the rest is clothing rails. The cost will really depend on how many shelves and bits you want inside.

An option you could look at is getting Ikea pax carcasses and having a carpenter install them and add panelling up to the ceiling and skirting at the bottom to properly fit the floor to ceiling. Pop bespoke doors on them and they should look great X

NeverGoingToMove · 24/04/2025 19:37

We paid £3150 for a 2.7m straight run of floor to ceiling bespoke fitted wardrobes with sliding doors. Had them made and fitted by a local carpenter, the big companies quoted double that.

IReallyLoveItHere · 24/04/2025 19:42

There are a few companies that turn the IKEA Pax wardrobes into something that looks fitted. My friend did this, bought and installed the frames and insides then gave the company measurements to get doors that go right to the floor, custom coving and side panels.

Hortus · 24/04/2025 19:48

Son and daughter in law have just done a 4m row of IKEA pax wardrobes in their bedroom and have made them look built in themselves. Neither had any experience doing anything like it, but they have followed you tube videos etc, they took off skirting, built a wooden plinth and replaced the skirting on top, filled in the small side gaps and top with MDF and trim, filled gaps etc, painted all the doors and frame etc. I have very high standards for decorating and work done in the house and I think it looks excellent. They have saved a lot of money, the downside is that it's taken many evenings and weekends to do, but it's been worth it for the cost saving.

OneLoftyLion · 24/04/2025 20:14

Hey! Yes, we had a double built last year and it was £2,500.
