Kitchen extension...

A bit of a wwyd....

We were planning an extension for a new kitchen and incorporating the dining room by knocking wall down. All planned, architecture drawings done, kitchen plan done with us imminently pressing buy (DIY kitchens before price hike).... then structural engineer visits....

He's calculated again that the beam size needed is too big for foundations so builder will need to dig more than he's already going to do. Builders have quoted another £10k for this additional work 😳

Immediate reaction was a no, can't do that but with kitchen the cost was heading towards £80k so it's nearly 10% extra.

We've therefore been looking at just knocking through to dining room and no extension but we're a bit disappointed if we're honest. It's always going to be the compromise, the smaller kitchen with less storage and not really what we want.

So my question is have any of you had similar and had to scrap plans and got over the feel of how rubbish it was or have you raised the extra cash.....

We’ve had a similar experience. Victorian terrace, planning a side return extension for bigger kitchen. Spent thousands on architect fees etc only to be told it needed underpinning for the extra weight. About 15k extra.

We did consider it but it kind of took the excitement away as it meant we couldn’t do anything else in the house for the foreseeable.

Instead we’re in the process of moving our kitchen into the back reception room, put the dining area in the galley kitchen area and seating area at the back.

A bit disappointed but we’re spending extra on finishes like aluminium doors, quartz worktops, fancy lighting and getting the rest of the house exactly how we like it.

Then i would like to just enjoy living in the house and stop spending money on it.

Could you move the kitchen into a larger area?
