Talk to me about your kitchen sink...

We (oh and I) are having a heated debate totally reasonable grown-up discussion about what to do with our grotty old stainless steel sink and worktop. We can spend a bit but don't want to go over the top i.e. granite and ceramic, but do want it to last well and it to work properly. He thinks a new SS sink will be fine... We only have 600ml depth to work with currently as we don't want to change the cupboards underneath. (although if I have to I will make him suggest it). There is also a corner cupboard in the run that would have to be changed if we did, what can you do with them?

I like the composite ones with drainage, he's stressing about our current drainer and whether it will fit (obviously we can get a new one) and about where the tap will go (can't go behind the whole sink as there won't be room, I think?) We currently have a single tap in the middle, personally I prefer two smaller taps (unfashionable, I know but I think they're more practical!)

Tell me your setups, please? We need input of ideas!

We have a Rangemaster granite composite sink in grey, I'm happy with it but it is only about 3 years old, DH changed it himself as our last composite sink was about 20 years old and looked a stained state, we were limited with what we could get as the hole was already in the worktop so we could only get the same or bigger.

Don't get composite, they stain. I've just got ceramics plus worktop (laminate) from howdens and it was very reasonable and looks amazing. (Also kitchen cabinets but they sell them separately) speak to your builder and see what they recommend size wise

Franke stainless steel for me. 11 years old and cleans up a treat with Bar Keepers friend and occasional soak with bleach.

Parents have a white Villeroy and Bosch ceramic with built in drainer. Years old and still looks clean and gleams. They use a plastic coated rack to protect the sink bottom from scratches and knocks.

I would pay the money for a quality brand.

Thank you @lifesabitchandthenyoudie and @CornedBeef451. The wallpaper is due to have a piece of tempered glass put over it - which is what we have behind our range cooker 😉

@lifesabitchandthenyoudie I have a dark grey sink and can confirm they do stain - also show limescale if you're in a hard water area

I’ve got a black composite and it does show white marks over time but a bit of a scrub gets rid of them.

I would never have the draining ‘holes’ in a worktop - my ex had them in his house and i hated it. The water just gathers in the recesses and gets slimey and gungey - and also shows limescale marks! Having to dry it all after every use got old very quickly. You also couldn’t fit much on… you’d think it’s the same size as a normal draining board but really it’s more the same size as the max width of the recesses which isn’t the same thing.

Thanks for the further input, I'm veering away from the composite...

primarily because we have been gifted an old Belfast sink, with drainer; the glaze is crazed but no chips or cracks. It even has the old porcelain (?) legs! We're considering whether it will be ok to use. Will post a pic when I have one...
