Next door builders using portaloo

KylieWasHere · 17/07/2023 14:31

We’re having an extension done to our detached house and our next door neighbours are having some work done at the same time. We’ve seen that their builders are using the portaloo we’ve hired. Next door didn’t hire portaloo.

No one asked us anything.

should we say something?

I guess it doesn’t impact us (won’t cost us more), but for example if damage was done to the portaloo it would be our builders / us who get charged. Our neighbour is a lovely elderly man so don’t want to upset him.

any advice? Are we just being petty?!

No, you arnt being petty. As you say it’s you who are liable for damage.

Perhsps you could ask them if they’d like to go halves.

I would turn a blind eye to that. In the grand scheme of the cost of an extension, the chances of any damage aren't worth worrying about and the risk of damaging good relations with a nice elderly neighbour is.

KievLoverTwo · 17/07/2023 14:39

I bet they're just being lazy and he hasn't even noticed.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 17/07/2023 14:49

I would only worry about how much sooner it would need emptying due do extra deposits.

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/07/2023 14:50

You could ask for a contribution towards the cost

Tessisme · 17/07/2023 14:53

I think my knee jerk reaction would be to be irritated, but then I'd probably mull it over and think it really didn't matter. The chances of damage are probably slim to none.

Rudimental · 17/07/2023 14:53

Maybe his builders have assumed it's been hired for them? I doubt they care who's hired it, they just want to shit in it! 😂

TeapotCollection · 17/07/2023 14:53

Bit cheeky, can’t it be locked?

Nanny0gg · 17/07/2023 15:16

Is it in your garden?

If it's in the back garden I wouldn't be impressed with them coming round to use it

Talk to your builders and see what they think

Nowitstarts · 17/07/2023 15:18

I'm sure the builders must have discussed this between themselves?

andymary · 17/07/2023 15:33

I know it's just a Portaloo and it's gunna end up grotty either way, but I would just be concerned on if it gets filled up twice as quick, and lessens the hygiene for your own builders.
All depends on how long it's gotta be used for I guess without being emptied.

KylieWasHere · 17/07/2023 15:37

It’s in our front garden. So they’re coming through our gate to use it (and then leaving the gate open!)

we can see all this through our Ring camera.

Just let them use the portaloo FGS.

ladycarlotta · 17/07/2023 16:06

it's not the builders' fault, it's your CF neighbours who are saving on the cost of a Portaloo by sending them to use yours. Surely it's potentially going to need more regular replacing if two lots of builders are using it? I would ask them to split the cost, they should have factored this in.

userxx · 17/07/2023 16:11

Taking the piss.

Taking the piss.

🤣🤣🤣

MonumentalLentil · 17/07/2023 16:13

They tend to have a padlock on them round here. I would do that and tell your builders not to let them use it, and put a closer on your gate.
Surpirsed it's not already full if it's not locked and in the front garden, people tend to treat them as a public convenience, especially runners, who also shit behind bins.

Jongleterre · 17/07/2023 16:14

If they had knocked and asked them I wouldn't have a problem. If as you say they are, coming in to your property and using it then I would have to say something.

However, it's entirely possible that your builders either know them or in the spirit of being friendly have said they could use it.

Lds1 · 17/07/2023 16:14

If you do decide you don't want them to use it, put a combination lock on it and give your builders the code

LookItsMeAgain · 17/07/2023 16:15

Don't deal with the builders. Deal with your neighbours. Tell them that their builders are using a portaloo that you hired for the use of YOUR builders.

Ask your neighbours if they allow their builders to use their toilet in their house. If not, ask them what they are doing about it.

This is an issue 100% caused by your neighbours and not informing their builders what to do if they need to use a toilet.

It's not your job to pay for a portaloo for their builders, particularly if their builders are leaving your front gate open after taking the liberty of using a toilet that is on another person's property.

Flopsythebunny · 17/07/2023 16:15

Does it really matter?

Kitcaterpillar · 17/07/2023 16:16

Incredibly petty. Come on. Four people are using it instead of two (or whatever). What damage are they going to do having a piss?

Come. On. Who has the energy to care about this...

Hoppinggreen · 17/07/2023 16:17

Presumably the more people who use it the quicker it will need to emptied?
That may end up costing you

CC4712 · 17/07/2023 16:18

I would initially ask your own builders. Maybe they know the other lot, and said 'sure, use the loo'

Maybe they don't know them at all. I'd then approach next door and suggest going halves. If he says no- get a lock.

I 'think' that providing a toilet and hand washing facilities is a requirement for planning permission/certain building projects and the council person could ask to see those facilities. Might be wrong.

Are you works due to finish before or after theirs?
