Can I use an integrated dishwasher without a cupboard to put it in?

My ancient (25+ years) freestanding dishwasher has finally given up on me with some unrepairable faults.

I want to replace it, but I don't want to buy another freestanding one as I will be getting my kitchen re-done in about six months' time and I will definitely be having my dishwasher integrated as part of that.

This might be a stupid question, but can I just buy an integrated dishwasher now and start using it without a cupboard to put it in? Would there be a way to open the door? I do realise it'll look weird but I don't care at all about aesthetics for the next six months.

Would it not need to be attached to a unit or it would just tip over? We chose to keep our freestanding dishwasher and washing machine when we got our kitchen done as it makes them easier to access

I had a free standing dishwasher in a house I used to rent. The dishwasher broke and an integrated one was delivered in error. The plumber couldn't install it as the door wouldn't open/ close without it being attached to a unit. I'm however unsure if that's a case for every integrated appliance or this particular model we had delivered

An integrated dishwasher doesn't go in a cupboard but will sit between 2 cupboards and has a matching door. It should work OK where a freestanding one is but you might find you need to buy a cheap door to put on it as without it the weight won't feel right and it may not open and close easily.

Mine doesn't sit in a unit, just between two units. You do need a unit door fixed to the front though as integrated DW doors need the weight of a door to open. You can get a door for a tenner from B and Q though I'd have thought.

It will work without a cupboard door on the front ,but the dishwasher front will spring up very fast as there is no weight on the front. You just have to keep your knee/ foot on it when loading/ unloading. Its not ideal.

We were in the same situation as you. As mentioned by other posters the integrated dishwasher needed to have the weight of a kitchen door to be able to use it easily. We attached a piece of OSB we had kicking around in the garage to imitate a kitchen unit door. Did the trick! We did cover it in stick on vinyl to make it easy to clean, wipe splashes. You might be able to pick up a random kitchen cupboard door off facebook marketplace/freecycle site/DIY shop clearance area if you aren't bothered about it matching existing kitchen.

Buy a cheap secondhand one to tide you over. They usually come with a warranty.
