Big TV small alcove

We’ve currently got an old 32” tv and want to upgrade to a 43”. The problem we have is our new home has small alcoves to the side of the chimney breast. Anyone got their tv on a wall bracket that comes out of the side wall of their alcove? Don’t want it wall mounted and thinking of other options!

Idk about wall mounting, but have you seen those new flat screen TVs that come with picture frame outsides that are designed for chimney breasts? They look like works of art. Quite a smart solution imo. You can run a landscape painting or whatever on them when not watching.

We're buying a house with a similar problem. In fact our TV will fit into one of the alcoves but we have a corner sofa and where it's positioned means we'd be facing the chimney and the other alcove. So we'd need something similar where the wall bracket would angle the TV so we could see it. I want it on the wall but dh doesn't like TV on wall. So watching this thread with interest

You can get all sorts of brackets that tilt and extend on an arm.

The problem with the arm extending ones is that if the TV comes out any sort of distance from the wall it puts a lot of torque (force) on the arm. So it has to be mounted very securely, either direct into masonry or on a special bracket that spans the studs in a stud wall.

Any of the TV mounting services will probably be able to advise you and I think generally do no cost site assessments.

Your TV doesn't sound too huge, so it will probably be OK. The thing to be careful of is not to ignore their recommendations. I have known some people do this and insisted that their TVs are mounted in unsuitable places with unsuitable brackets with catastrophic results for both the wall and the TV.

@GasPanic great advice - yes will be very careful- lived in old houses too long to know that any DIY means collateral damage 😂

Can't you use a unit which will extend beyond the alcove and put the TV on the diagonal ?

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 20/07/2023 16:00

@clarrylove we’ve just done that and it looks ok to be honest! still might go down the bracket route but will see how we get on for now

That's what we are doing too. My husband is in the process of building the unit himself.
