Hallway cupboard - how to organise

Sorry for the slightly boring thread...

We have a really nice built in closet in our hallway, it's a fair size - full height (Victorian house so high ceilings) around 80-90 cm wide, similar depth.

We are a family of four, I think we would like to use it for coats, school bags, shoes etc.

I can't quite figure out how to lay it out and where to buy what we need.

Eyeing up the IKEA Platsa system - could buy an open wardrobe frame and put that in, maybe? Or is it better to get something made to measure?

Thinking maybe a shelf up top for occasional things, then a rail across the width for coats, then a shelf at the bottom for shoes and other bits. Hooks on the back of the door for school bags, umbrellas etc?

Do you have the budget for getting a carpenter to do bespoke built in?

Fillyourshoes · 10/07/2023 07:52

I did for my hallway and I love it

Probably if we thought it was worth it. I think my issue is that I can't quite work out what we want!

My DH is convinced we want a rail for coats, I am privately sceptical that we will actually hang up coats and would prefer more hooks

I would suggest hooks for coats and bags, two levels too for adults and lower for children. Then kallax style boxes in a unit for each person for gloves and hats, separate one for waterproofs etc and then ones for shoes, all labelled so that each person knows where there things are and to put things away in the correct place.

Fillyourshoes · 10/07/2023 08:10

No rail for coats!!

and my bespoke hallway storage makes me happy every time I see it… 2 years later!

Fillyourshoes · 10/07/2023 08:10

With kids especially - you want to make it easy and accessible

not faffingaround with hangers

Fillyourshoes · 10/07/2023 08:11

Don’t be “privately skeptical”

be “openly skeptical”

Haha!

I see his point that a rail uses the space better..and he has some coats which don't have loops.

But am now wondering if we could just get one or two of these as well as normal hooks

it might look better but who wants to be faffing around with hangars every time they leave and come in. Not me. And sure as heck not teenagers!

no problem with the hoops. Just get generous sized hooks

Fillyourshoes · 10/07/2023 08:30

That looks very ugly, especially for a lovely Victorian hallway

It will all be behind a door!

We ended up putting a rail in after trying to use the hooks in the hall cupboard we inherited didn’t work for us. We just ended up with permanent coats in a pile on the floor when the one you wanted wasn’t on top and people ina hurry not rehanging the ones they’d removed to get to the one teh6 wanted (looking at you dh and ds😡)

🤷‍♀️ not for me.

i definitely wouldn’t do rail

and I’d do built in bespoke

good luck whatever you decide

Have you been to Pinterest?! Search hallway, hallway cupboard or boot room and you will find every possible permutation.

It’s especially good for finding ideas you never would have thought of. Searching ‘family command centres’ was a revelation! Sounds a bit odd but some great ideas for organising. You could will lose hours there but I find it does help to work out what you want and don’t want.

I feel like a shelf is easy to diy. Thick plywood ( paint it white or something) buy brackets screw to underside of shelf plus into wall. I didn’t do it but the built in wardrobe has similar. Rather than hooks I’d do pegs which has a Victorian feel. Take it around three sides kids, dh, you each have a side.

I have similar in my utility but made of oiled pine. Depending on height maybe a double layer with shoe storage at bottom. I found a company on eBay who made it to measure but it was ten years ago. It was not expensive a couple of hundred quid for quite a lot of storage. Still in good nick now so feels like a good investment.

I like the look of the pegs but do you find coats slide off?

OP posts:

No they are shaped, tbh most pegs have a couple hanging from the loops and an extra one by the hood and everything stays up. Must thin the coat herd.

No idea if they are still going but made by this company who cleverly advertise on the bottom of their boot jacks.

It won’t win any style awards but this is our hallway cupboard. We have coat hooks on one side (just for DH’s coats), double height ikea shoe racks on three sides then shelves round 2 walls (the top 2 shelves go round all 4 walls). We also have two rows of coat hooks on the door for school bags.

Do you mind me asking what kind of price it was, I’m currently thinking about a bespoke cupboard but don’t know if I’m wasting anyones time by even getting quotes

TakeMe2Insanity · 10/07/2023 20:07

Is all the space behind the door or to the sides of the door. Ours is just over 6”3 in height but the bulk of the space is to the left with a slither to the right. On the right we put a 6” shoe rack. The left has a coat rail a shelf, underneath we have storage for hats/bags/scarves etc. We had enough room to put a small mirror.
