Dishwasher or washing machine

We are in the process of re doing our kitchen. If we have both a washing machine and slimline dishwasher it makes the sink a littl awakes in the corner. We are considering putting in a full size dishwasher and moving the washing machine into the garage. Does anyone have any experience of this or think it's a good or bad idea? The entrance to the garage is from the garden rather than directly attached to the house.

Do you have water supply/drainage in the garage? Might make it expensive if not.

We used the end of our external garage as a utility - was brilliant. Kept all the detritus out of the house!

It's a house we are waiting to buy so can't be 100% but I'm sure I've seen a water feed and drainage coming out of the wall we would put it on.

Other half has never had the washing machine in the kitchen and I've never had it anywhere else. Think it's just a change of mindset for me.

So in the winter you'd have to go outside In the rain or snow to take the washing to/from the machine in the garage ? I wouldn't fancy that.

Is there space for the washing machine in the bathroom?

Sgtmajormummy · 09/07/2023 11:35

With three of us at home I generally fill the 45cm dishwasher over one day so it fits into my routine. A larger one would put me out of “Grinsynch”.
Don’t forget you can install a draining board in the counter over a dishwasher which would make your sink more versatile.
Having a utility in the garage is a good idea as long as you’re not parking in it. No petrol fumes please! I had an area with a deep sink (good for dog washing and garden hoses), ceiling mounted airer, washer and condenser dryer with a table for folding clothes all on one end of the garage. Plus a chest freezer which put out warm air to help with drying.
Now I have a washer in the kitchen for the first time in years and the noise from 2-hour cycles really gets to me!
So in your case I’d go for the garage option but really make it work for me.

Draining board over dishwasher

Dishwasher or washing machine

Garage. Would also let you set up a dryer if necessary, and ideally give you some space for sorting laundry as well. And I say this as somebody whose washer is in a basement only accessible from the street. Washers in kitchens are an oddity and I'd much rather use precious undercounter space for extra storage, esp. if it means fitting an extra drawer.

My preference if space allows, would be washer in laundry area with drying space, and then bathroom, and then kitchen. That reduces the time and distance to process. If all those options are out, garage is better than carting it to the nearest stream and back. If space were an issue, I would also rely on the two-handed dishwashers floating about who are more likely to help with dishes than linens.

I would 100% make small utility area in garage. Means you can add a heat pump tumble dryer and store all laundry related stuff.

Ours is in cellar, only entrance outside. It’s -20 and snow here in winter and it’s not really an issue as it’s not miles away just a few metres walk at side of house. Our kitchen is also too small otherwise, old house designed before laundry machines installed

ChadCMulligan · 09/07/2023 12:12

Our washing machine is in the utility room and prior to that it was in the bathroom (perfectly OK if the socket is 3m from the bath/shower and you can cheat by having the socket outside the bathroom and just running the lead through a hole).

I much prefer them not in the kitchen as that's prime space which is wasted.

RitaFires · 09/07/2023 12:27

My washing machine is in a small utility room accessed from the garden. I find it great for hanging things out, I have drying racks and a dehumidifier in there too. I like having the laundry out of the kitchen but I understand that having to step out of the house to put on a wash would be off-putting for some.

Put the washer in the garage. Bonus is you dont have to listen to it running

rwalker · 09/07/2023 15:10

Definitely washer in garage

Clymene · 09/07/2023 15:12

I'd put the washing machine in the garage. Is it close enough to the house that you could create a covered walkway between the two?

A slimline dishwasher is a waste of space.

GrinAndVomit · 09/07/2023 15:17

I had my tumble drier in the garage in the old house. I don’t use it daily, like I do the washing machine, but it was a big enough pain in the arse that when we bought our current house, I couldn’t wait to have a utility room.
It’s the rain, the snow, having to be dressed, shoes on etc. it’s a bit of a ball ache.
I’d go for a slim line dishwasher and washing machine inside.
