Cost of storing belonging vs buying again.

We are going chain free to speed up our selling process. This means moving in with relatives for a couple of months while we look for a new place.

We are hoping that we will avoid a certain amount of gazundering this way as we will be able to walk away from the last minute £50K drops in offers as we approach completion on the basis that by that point the buying party will have accrued more costs and so while we are happy to consider acceptable offers, bullying tactics won't work as we will be able to walk away.

However we will need to store some of our furniture and belongings. We're looking at about a £6k cost for the amount we need to store over ( let's say) a 3 month period. That's a fairly conservative estimate.

We can store a certain amount of stuff with parents but am I mad in thinking I should just give all our ( mostly IKEA ) furniture to charity and buy again new once we've moved?

I should probably add we're 2 people, no children. Not an enormous amount of 'stuff' but am not sentimental about any of it.

I would look at other storage options! Exh stored his stuff for 6 months, whole house worth, for £2500

Find ither storage. I'm about to store a 3 bed house for 2 months and it's only costing £200 + VAT

Bloody hell! Ok will definitely have a look at other options. Thanks.

I'd do a worst case scenario and look at the costs and what you'd be storing.

We did this, although went into rented house and used the garage for storage so no additional storage cost. We'd anticipated about 6-8 months in total (house on market and sold quickly). We were in rental for 18 months! House sold and completed within three months. Looked for house to buy for 3-4 months, offer accepted, 4 months to completion, 3 months to wait for builder's quotes and then to start work. 5 months of renovation.

We'd also done things like brought our fridge, freezer, dishwasher with us, which might seem crazy, but our budget ended up so tight with cost of buying and then renovations that we were glad we already had appliances and furniture.

It becomes a pain when you start needing to access clothes that were out of season when you first stored them!

Are you using a removal company? Ours offered storage and it proved much cheaper to go with them than one of the big standard storage unit companies.

If you can't get cheaper, don't pay more than the furniture is worth.

I wouldn't trust it to get out of your house, into storage, out again and into your new home without getting damaged. Even more so if it's not solid wood and a lot of it is glossy finished/veneer. As soon as you store one piece upside down on top of another you have damage potential, unless you and your removals firm are exceptionally careful and wrap everything.

I am not sure it's worth a 6k risk unless you are really attached to the stuff.

6k?? Wow.
Have a look at Pickfords, who store stuff in crates in a warehouse. I think it was 50/mth/crate. The crates are big.
