Curtain length on this stupid window?!

Onthedoubleline · 06/07/2023 09:27

Hello,

What do I do with our new bedroom window?! I will be adding a black out roller blind but what length of curtains would you then put around it? To the sill? Down to above the radiator?

I know that you guys are a hive mind for such pressing (first world) problems. Many thanks x

Curtain length on this stupid window?!

I'd personally want floor length but if you're worried about the radiator being covered then curtains to just above the radiator. If you're doing a blind as well then floor length would look fine with them left open and the blind down.

eandz13 · 06/07/2023 09:30

I'd personally get ones to the windowsill, I always think it looks tidier when curtains fit the window!

dartsofcupid · 06/07/2023 09:31

Just short of the radiator. Cos it’s so wide the curtains might look a bit brief just below the sill. Lovely sunny room and green view!

PinkFootstool · 06/07/2023 09:32

I'd do the width of the wall (I love dramatic curtains!) and floor length, but tuck the curtains behind the radiator when they are closed if the heating is on.

Probably a deeply unpopular opinion, but that's what I do in my spare room!

badluckorbadvibes · 06/07/2023 09:33

I wouldn't put a curtain there, a decent blind alone will be adequate and look so much neater.

RoseBucket · 06/07/2023 09:33

One to the window sill so you can still heat the room.

Unless it’s for aesthetics and you’re using the blind then I’d go for full length.

Thank you 🙏 this is the view of all our trees we need to deal with 😂😫🤦🏼‍♀️

Floor length , windowsill height is very dated, however personally I’d put a gorgeous velvet or silk Roman blind in, with either black out or thermal lining,

Hazelnuttella · 06/07/2023 09:36

I’d go floor length but tuck behind the radiator in winter when the heating is on.

If you have above the radiator all the hot air will disappear behind the curtain.

Five decades on earth and did not know this! I change me vote to floor length🤣

CatsOnTheChair · 06/07/2023 09:37

I put in curtains for warmth.
I'd go just longer than the top of the radiator, so they can be tucked behind, or windowsill length - but I think that will look like very short curtains in that room.

Saisong · 06/07/2023 09:41

On a similar window I got made to measure so that they fell a cm or 2 longer than the top of the radiator. That way I can tuck behind the radiator when it is on without creasing the curtains. I also like to get them wide enough that they open well to the side of the window to allow for max light.

MarchingOnTogether · 06/07/2023 09:42

I'd do a blind and floor length if you don't intend to close them.
But if you will be closing them then probably mid length that comes below the window ledge but above the radiator.

SoftAsABearsElbow · 06/07/2023 09:45

I'd go down to the ground - primarily because I hate radiators on while I am trying to sleep.

That leaves me the option of closed blind/open curtains during the evening when the heating might be on. Closed when I got to bed and the heating is off.

Just accept the heating will come on behind the radiator but open them when I get up, to let the heat back out into the room.

Waystation · 06/07/2023 09:47

Blind and floor length.

areyouhavinglaugh · 06/07/2023 09:50

Go for a well made thermal lined Roman blind.

You could add dress curtains too if you like

Reallybadidea · 06/07/2023 10:58

Either a really nice Roman blind and no curtains or blackout blind and floor length. You can leave the blind closed and curtains open when the radiator is on. Anything other than floor length curtains looks awful IMHO although I know other people feel differently!

kitchenhelprequired · 06/07/2023 11:09

I'd get a roman blind made to measure either inside or outside the recess. Generally better for energy efficiency than heat trapping behind curtains.

Talipesmum · 06/07/2023 11:14

We had exactly the same dilemma a few years ago in new loft room. We went for curtains 17cm ish below the windowsill. Reasons:

Would have liked a Roman blind, but there’s not enough space above the window to allow it to gather up without blocking out too much light (looks the same with yours)

We also have a radiator below the window and the hot air does not disappear behind the curtain at all. It heats the room up just fine - and it’s a massive loft room.

I liked the look of long curtains but was more concerned about heat being trapped behind them, as that’s the only radiator, and I def wasn’t wanting to leave them open. But more importantly, I’d chosen an outrageously expensive fabric and it would have been double the already vast cost to make floor length curtains up.

Also I have a desk in front of the window and long curtains would have been a bit in the way.

If you can afford long ones then they look v nice but I’m not sure about having the radiator behind them. Am sure others can advise. I would avoid a Roman blind with the ceiling / window clearance you have.

actually the opposite for the ops. Roman blinds are about 7 or eight inches when gathered up, and if the op puts them say an inch or two from the roof it will make the window look much bigger and allow full light in. Even if she went inside recess it would have minimal impact.

I got some gorgeous ones from blinds 2 go, in silks and velvets, with either black out or thermal lining depending on the window and they work a treat.

I feel differently! I think just blinds looks horrible and unfinished no matter how fancy the blind. And floor length over a radiator looks grubby. So I'd go to just below the sill.

But you'll get every opinion represented!
