What to do with this small patio

I have a small 3.5x4.5m north facing patio that is rarely used and I really want to improve it.
We are planning to put sone stone tiles and maybe some planters along the wall, add some seating and a bbq table but no matter how I arrange it the place looks terrible. To make matters worth it is surrounded by white wall which I hate.
many ideas or suggestions on how I can improve it?
I was going to go with garden designer but feels like such a waste for such a small place!

You need to maximise the space. If this was mine, I’d probably go along the following lines:

Take out all the planters taking up floor space and don’t introduce any new ones.

Cut back any overhanging foliage from neighbours plants.

Freshen up the walls with white paint. I know you say you don’t like the white walls, but they are/can be great for making the space feel brighter. If you really don’t want white, maybe a pale sky blue?

Your idea of a pale stone floor sounds lovely. I would also maybe look into a resin floor - no pointing to keep fresh etc?

To introduce greenery, maybe two sets of shelves running around the walls with small pots on?

An L-shaped sofa type arrangement in the right hand corner. I’d spend a bit of time looking for a table that’s adjustable. You can get ones which can be set to coffee table and dining table height. That way you get maximum use from the seating area.

And an outdoor rug that complements whatever colour scheme you go for.

Rather than money on a garden designer, I’d probably rather pay for an electrician to sort out external plug sockets and lighting - your space could be transformed in the evenings with some strategic lighting.

Great suggests above.

I’d be tempted to design it along the lines of a Greek patio area, bright pink pots, Greek blue paint, lighting, some fragrant Mediterranean herbs. A nice retreat.

You could use Frenchic Alfresco paint on your storage, perhaps in Kiss Me Sloely against a fresh white wall

How about a built in bench on two sides and a long, narrow table?

BackAgainstWall · 05/07/2023 08:21

Clear it out completely.

Paint the walls white or ivory.

Do not cutback the foliage.

Get some decent out side furniture.

Get some decent plant pots with some gorgeous plants - something to really focus the eye - architectural and country cottage types.

It’s Simple to create a really lovely space that’s also good to look out on from inside your home.

Think of it as another room.

Shutuptrevor · 05/07/2023 08:24

I would say:
Standardise floor colour/cover
Put storage seating along far wall and get rid of that grey cupboard on the left
Colourful cushions on storage seats

Then reassess :)

I'd be grateful for the foliage from neighbouring properties. I'd paint it a colour I liked, something bold but not too dark. I'd build a bench seat with storage on one side, and a narrow raised bed on the other. I would plant with tall slender plants with trailers under. Fold up table to hang on the wall. Attractive lighting at low level. Small water feature for sound. Sail or canopy roof. Rug to roll out & cushions (stored in your bench seat). Candles.

Floor tiles with a pattern

Leave walls white and leave overhang of foliage

Affix trellis and start some climber plants along one wall

Corner outdoor sofa & table

Small outdoor kitchen of bbq area& place to stack plates etc

Lots of pots in leftover spaces

Pinterest and a small water feature!

Type in tiny balcony garden and copy an idea you like down to the finest detail… proper lighting and built in storage bench seat would be fabulous.

Franklin2000 · 05/07/2023 09:26

We google the issue, so in this case I’d put small courtyard garden ideas. I’d then pick something I like and copy it exactly. Sometimes you might pick up different ideas which you can incorporate if you’re feeling brave!

This looks the same size as my son's patio area.

Paint the walls either white or a mural on one wall. My DS did a seaside scene on his back wall. Decking on the floor. He tied a piece of linen shaped like a sail across the top to act like a sunshade. He bought a small round glass patio table and small sofa and 2 chairs in a strong ratan like material. He was given a large packing box about 9 foot long and 18 inches wide and he used the lid as a backboard and painted it with flowers. Then planted up long planter which sits along one wall. BBQ on far side.

Gymtastic · 05/07/2023 09:53

I disagree with taking out planters and cutting back foliage, making it a lovely green space with lots of plants will hugely improve it. Honestly the decking needs a good scrub and stain, better furniture and lots of plants and it will be lovely

SabrinaThwaite · 05/07/2023 10:00

I know this area is larger, but something like this?

We are moving into somewhere with a small patio garden. I’m thinking of an outdoor mirror to give the impression of more light and space and I’ve got an old wrought iron coat stand that I’m planning to grow plants up and hang baskets from in one corner.

Loobydoobies · 05/07/2023 10:14

A garden mirror was my first thought too as it should help make the space brighter.

WonkyBricks · 05/07/2023 10:19

I'd be tempted to go for a lovely bright mural in oranges and yellows, a mix of different sized planters in once corner and seating in another corner.

I'm dying for a bright mural on my garden wall, trying to pluck up the courage to message a local artist I've been following on insta!

Clever idea with coat stand.

Someone definitely needs burying under that patio…

fireflyloo · 05/07/2023 11:09

Have a look on Pinterest. There's loads of things you could do with it. Nice tiles, paint walls, fairy lights, big mirror to reflect light, outdoor heater, outdoor rug and nice seating.

EdithWeston · 05/07/2023 11:15

I would definitely keep plants - but what do you want? A feeling of garden (in which case you definitely need planting) or another room?

Have a look at the balcony and container gardens (and maybe the slightly larger sanctuary gardens) from this year's Chelsea Flower Show

Show gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023 / RHS Gardening

Which appeal to you, and why?

Wakeuptiredagain · 05/07/2023 11:40

Thank you for all the suggestions, definitely will be putting light stone tiles and corner seating. I am thinking some reflective mural next to bbq along the left wall.
I do like green plants hence was thinking to have built in tall planters. Will this make the floor place feel even smaller?
I am attaching the look I like which unfortunately don't have space for.
