Ballpark estimate of value - fireplace

Hello, I had to remove a cast iron fire insert from my early 1900s semi, as I needed a secondary heat source that actually throws some heat into the room as opposed to up the chimney. I've kept the ... I want to say fire surround, so the stove replacement doesn't look lost in the large opening.

I'd quite like to shift the fire insert, but have no idea if anyone would buy it or what I should list it at. It has markings on the back which say RdR 16 but I don't know what these mean. It has some damage to the detailing in the fire basket bit and would need welding in a couple of places, where the joints have broken as it's been manhandled at some point in its history.

I was thinking of just bunging it on Ebay or Facebook Marketplace but I have no idea what to set the price as. I posted in an architectural salvage group but got no response...

Any advice appreciated. Picture of the actual insert.

Such a shame to rip out the original features and sell them 🥲

Radiodread · 03/07/2023 16:17

Yes, usually I would agree. However, they are not practical and money is tight, hence I can't afford to just have the heating on a million hours a day in the winter. As I said, need an efficient secondary heat source (I also collect free wood).

In any case, I suspect this is not an original fitment of the house. I think it dates from earlier or later - it doesn't look correct for the year the house was built.

I'd put that on FB marketplace for £75. Be prepared to have a barrage of people offer you half of asking. So maybe overprice it a bit and let people feel they're getting a bargain.

I wouldn't bother with eBay. Too many fees, you can't post it, it limits the amount of people you can sell it to.

Sometimes saying you can deliver for the cost of petrol helps selling on FB.

Word to the wise: if you get someone saying 'I can't come as I'm out of town, can I send my sister/I can't come, can I send a courier?' - just block them - that's now a common scam.

Do you have a local general auction house? They would give a valuation and sell it for you, if you wanted. You will have very restricted buyers on ebay, etc as would need collecting. Price I don't really know you could get anything from a tenner to a few hundred, just depends if anyone fancies it.

Radiodread · 03/07/2023 16:35

Thanks all. FB marketplace and deep breath for the CF 'I'll take it for a tenner if you deliver it to my house 200 miles away this evening'....

Auction house, probably, but I'm not sure it'd be worth the commission? I don't think it is worth hundreds and hundreds.

Good luck with the cowboys.

Oh yes, there are some absolute peaches on FB marketplace - it seems to be the worst of the worst.

I wish I could accurately date it as this would allow me to describe and value it properly.

Easy £100 if its undamaged. Not much call for them though so be prepared for it to take a while.

Prettylittleroses · 03/07/2023 16:56

I think the rdr 16 refers to size, is there a 16 inches measurement?

it is a late Victorian fire basket/insert but it looks very small so a limited market. You’d be looking for someone to put one back in of that size, however maybe the pic is misleading.

Prettylittleroses · 03/07/2023 17:14

Actually I want to correct myself, it might not be Victorian, it could be early Edwardian, depending on when your house was built. It looks more Edwardian,

FuzzyPuffling · 03/07/2023 19:28

I did similar ( breached chimney needed lining, so we had a log burner installed for efficiency).
I sold the cast iron fireplace for £100 to a local reclamation yard. They collected it the same day it was removed.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/07/2023 19:50

Depending on where you live, contact an architectural salvage yard or a fireplace restoration place. They might buy it from you.

orangeflags · 03/07/2023 19:57

I'd try it on eBay at £50 start. Collection only

I recently listed a basketball hoop on FB for the princely sum of £5. I'd have put it on Freecycle but I couldn't be bothered with the time wasters.

I live in outer NW London which was clearly specified on the ad. A man wanted me to drive it to Kettering (for free) which is a 3-4 hour round trip. When I declined, he became quite shirty.

What planet are these people on?
