Painting over lining paper

I absolutely despise DIY of any sort and am basically lazy so looking for the path of least resistance here (short of paying someone else to do it which can't currently afford).

One of the bedrooms in our new house had what I thought was a feature wall in patterned wallpaper and then three painted walls. Just finished scraping off the paper from the feature wall, plaster etc in perfectly good nick underneath. Have just discovered the other three walls also have paper on them under the paint, that lining paper stuff people use and then paint over. Do I absolutely have to remove this or can I prime it and paint over the top of it?

As long as the paper surface is sound then it’s fine to paint over it.

You will get better finish if u remove the paper then u can also repair any wall imperfections and get smooth finish
it is not that difficult tub of warm soapy water and soak it with sponge and it will come off straight away

I'm not bothered if the finish isn't perfect tbh. I'm really impatient and it took FOREVER taking off the paper on the feature wall.

We've done this in bedrooms, rather than have walls skimmed after a few coats of paint you won't see the joins.

The only issue I have is that you can't wipe the walls down.

Never wiped a wall down in my life so can't see that being an issue tbh 🤣

😂 I only spot clean when teenagers have spilled or the dogs wiped his face.

Yes it’s fine to do this. You probably won’t even need to prime if it’s already got emulsion on it, just slap it on over the top. But do make sure if there are any loose bits, to re stick them down.

Every single wall in our new house is painted over lining paper which I never even noticed when we viewed as the joins are barely noticeable. I bloody well hope we can paint straight over it successfully as there is no way I am stripping (and then probably having to reskim as god only knows what sort of state the actual plaster is in) and then repainting the whole house!

I have that done in my living room & dining room. Looks great. Just don't touch it with bare hands or run up against it.

I'll never do it again.

It's in the spare room which is rarely used so it should be OK from that perspective.

I think I saw wallpaper paint in B&Q

I've just scraped off lining paper that had been painted over. It was horrific and took AGES. And then the plaster underneath was a mix of nice plaster and bits of paint that were stuck to the plaster so needed sanding (2 whole walls). Stripping and painting a room normally takes me max 3 days (including ceiling, gloss and drying time) but this took over a week to do two walls.

If possible (ie paper is flat and joins can't be seen) I'd paint over. But it will have to be removed at some point.

My dad always insisted on putting up lining paper before painting - but his plastering was a bit dodgy....
