Large Load bearing wall

Has anyone removed a very large load bearing wall? The wall we want to remove is around 6-7m long. If so did you need to retain a pillar for the steel support?

I think you really need to get an expert to advise on this, a structural engineer or similar. One pillar may not be enough. And there's the nightmare scenario of building collapse during the removal/fitting.

It can Depend if the steel will go from outer wall to outer wall (both double skin) and what is above it

You definitely need a structural engineer to confirm

As per PP, you need a structural engineer. I’ve fitted very long beams before with no central pier, but decent piers and padstones either end.

BlueMongoose · 27/06/2023 16:40

That seems very long to me. Is there another floor above it, or just a roof? Either way, you need a structral engineer.

Most things are possible. Some things are very expensive.

It's a trade off between budget, how deep a beam you can hide in the ceiling etc, and any other compromises you are happy with eg narrow the opening
This is where a structural designer is useful (rather than someone to calculate a beam) as they can work with you/your architect/designer to get a good compromise.
Good luck!

Ok thanks. I’m definitely going to speak to a structural engineer but just wondered in the first place if anyone had done it.

@johnd2 very helpful insight - thank you!

@BlueMongoose there are rooms above the wall. It is very long, I have concerns about doing this but it will give us the open plan living space we would like
