Wooden Vs uPVC windows

Were having our windows replaced. The quote for wood is nearly twice the amount as for the same rough 'look' in uPVC. The wooden have a better u value (1, rather than 1.2). We can afford to do the wood. Wwyd?

I have wood at the front which is visible from the street and good quality upvc at the back.

Do they need replacing? You can usually get wooden windows repaired and thermal improvements made from draft stripping etc.

Are you listed or in a conservation area?

If a Georgian house, upvc will look awful and likley devalue it.

UPVC every time. I would not buy a house with wooden windows because of the upkeep.

This! Wood rots. Upkeep is a pain.

If it's Georgian then I think you need to go for wood.

I am a bit bemused at the poster who is clearly in a very fortunate position to be able to discount any property with uPVC windows. Sadly for plebs like me, the cost of replacement frames was prohibitive. I don't live in a period property though, so my windows don't look out of place.

if I could afford wood I would 100% go for it. They look much nicer.

The house we purchased unfortunately came with these gross wood-look windows....but there are just so many of them we can't afford to replace (and they don't actually need replacing).

Very frustrating, but the only downside to this house.

Our new windows and sliding doors ( well new 2 years ago), are Aluminium outside and oak inside.
I love them. No maintenance outside, and the wood look and naturalness indoors. Any others I replace will be the same.

Our neighbour did Aluminium on half, then did uvpc on small side extension to save costs. Both their alu and plastic ones are white so looked the same. 5 years on, the plastic ones have yellowed and they say won’t clean back to white

grass321 · 29/06/2023 13:45

Another vote for aluminium. You don't get the wide frame look you get with upvc.

LauraNicolaides · 29/06/2023 14:17

Aren't most Georgian houses in conservation zones and subject to a requirement for like-for-like replacement?

We can't put plastic windows in our much more common victorian house for that reason. (And because we're sneery snobs who would die of embarrassment Grin).

Wooden every single time.

I literally would not buy a house that have UPVC windows. Even the more expensive ones look dreadful.

Our 300 year old house has UPVC windows and it’s so much better than the previous wooden windows. They’re done in the same style as the wood was. My mum’s 200 year old house had it’s wooden sash windows replaced with plastic sash windows, and it’s so much warmer. When you look at hers and the house next door, which has the original white sash windows, you can barely tell the difference. I’m about to inherit my dad’s barn conversion, and am dreading the upkeep of the 30 year old wood windows . Some need replacing, all needs painting (I hate that stained wood look of the 90s!). Haven’t seen any aluminium windows that I’ve liked yet.

KevinDeBrioche · 29/06/2023 15:04

in a period property, wood without questions. They should be guaranteed for a minimum of ten years as should the painting.
