Hey all,

I’m currently in a one bedroom flat with two children. I have a bedroom entitlement of two bedrooms despite it being a one bed. My current rent is £1180 and I get the full amount paid via UC.

My LL is increasing my rent to £1450. This is a massive jump and there was a lot of back and forth as he originally wanted to increase it to £1500. I’ve accepted it as it means I don’t have to uproot my kids (youngest has a genetic disorder and has most of his appointments at home!)

Now here’s my question. My LHA is £310.68 a week. Can someone please help me figure out how much I’ll receive from UC each month? I’m not great at maths and would do £310.68 x 4 but I know there isn’t 4 weeks in every month so I’m sure that’s wrong.

Does anyone know the formula needed to work out the average of how much I’ll receive each month of the year? I know I’ll have to top some up but would like to have a rough amount in my head. Thanks so much!

310.68x52 then divide by 12

You might be able to apply for a discretionary housing payment to make up the rest if it is not affordable to you. I would call Shelter to get advice on who to ask and how.

Wow! Absolutely amazing, thank you @Waitingforsummer75 @KievLoverTwo for the quick responses!

That’s great. So all I need to do is top it up £103.72 each month from my pay. That is so helpful. I’ve heard about the discretionary housing payment so I’ll give Shelter a call next week to see how it all works. Appreciate it so much x

I got a DHP a few years ago when my husband left and I couldn’t afford the private rent.
Just search on your local Council's website for the DHP form. It will tell you where to submit it too once completed.
Ensure you fully explain your situation and offer info such as reasons to stay or why you can’t find a cheaper alternative, as the review pan assess each claim individually, there is no set criteria for a DHP.
Im not sure if all Councils do this the same way, but just double check because here, a DHP is a temporary measure. They get a sum of money in the pot each year for DHP’s and that’s it - when it’s gone it’s gone. They can award you an amount for up to 6 months, though 6 months is not guaranteed, and just because you are awarded that amount the first time, does not mean you automatically get the same the next time.

I managed to get the full gap between the LHA amount and rent for 6 months, but my second was less. I then managed to get a HA property and out of private rental so no longer required it x
