How is living in Shepperton?

BettyBoopBetty · 20/06/2023 18:18

In terms of commute, schools, raising DC, safety etc.
I know trains are not great but could potentially make it work i I requested extra flebility at work.
Is it a nice place to live?

Where are you originally from? That will help in understanding the area a bit. Are you from a city like London? It’s a small village with busses/trains. The transport is not as frequent or doesn’t run as late as the other neighbouring areas such as Staines, Sunbury, Ashford. It is a lovely town, the surrounding areas are nice too like Chertsey, Walton, Weybridge for places to eat etc.

Check timetables and journey planners to see what the latest bus/trains are. Other than that there’s not actually much to do there, but everything you need such as shopping centres or bigger supermarkets is a short bus journey away. There is a high street and pubs, big green and river, at least two primary schools inside Shepperton, and I think one main secondary. There are some type of private schools I’ve walked past but don’t know anything about them, my memory is telling me there is an all boys school but not 100% sure.

Primary schools
Saxon primary
St Nicholas primary

Secondary
Thamesmead

All of my friends either attended Thamesmead or the other schools in neighbouring areas such as Sunbury, Staines, Ashford, or Chertsey. This was extremely common and we would all get the bus together. Colleges are in Ashford, Weybridge, Egham so again neighbouring towns.

I personally never felt unsafe there. It’s a small village so pretty safe. Obviously there are always kids or younger people hanging around but that’s the same with all towns. I think it is one of the nicer, quieter places compared to Sunbury, Ashford or Staines.

We live in SW London but can’t afford to buy here so looking for a close commuter town which is ideally safe, cute, with ok trains and good schools.

In terms of our lifestyle, we have 1 DC so normally what we do is: playground/park, clubs and activities for DC, brunch or coffee at local cafes, local shops and supermerket. I don’t drive much so ideally I’d like to be in a place where I can walk everywhere (to the shops, gym, school etc)

Both of our sons went to Thamesmead (although we live the other side of Staines). Perfectly happy with the school (assuming it hasn't changed dramatically in the last 3 years).
High Street isn't exciting but it's quite pleasant. And the river is on your doorstep.

Lioness1989 · 21/06/2023 19:06

Do you need to travel to London for work? I suppose it could work but you would need to get a place nearer to the train station (near the high street). I used to live a bit further over the big bridge and it was a pain having to walk to the station and to school. Saying that I didn’t mind if I was walking to/from school with friends.

The train does go to London but depending on where you need to get to you will need to change over. So it goes to Waterloo for example and it also goes to Kingston, have a look on journey planner. Not a bad train journey, unlike the London tubes (my idea of hell) I wish I had the privilege of traveling on a nice normal train with aircon 🤣!

Looking at areas, some of the areas near the station are quite nice. Over the bridge is nice too and the roads around the local pubs that way. If you are relying on public transport you won’t want to move much further past the bridge/little shops. As an example Shepperton studios would be a long walk to the train station. I would suggest one day taking the train down from where you are now, and going for a drink or lunch, you can have a wonder around the high street area and see if you like the surroundings. If you need directions to the river let us know, it’s a nice walk. It’s at the other end of the high street past the big green.

BettyBoopBetty · 21/06/2023 21:51

@Lioness1989 thank you for this! Do you mean the big bridge crossing the A3 when you say “big bridge”?
I will need to go and check it out I think

Could you afford Walton or Hampton? Both of which I prefer. Nothing that wrong with shepperton - just personally prefer the other two. I do realise budget has to come into it.

Lioness1989 · 21/06/2023 22:14

Yeah that’s the One

BettyBoopBetty · 22/06/2023 09:19

@Crikeyalmighty there are a few properties within our budget in Walton, which would be nicer, I know and better with trains. Shepperton just seems a bit more affordable.
I think Hampton is very pricey and not well connected?

OP posts:
Crikeyalmighty · 22/06/2023 13:05

@BettyBoopBetty I would have a look around both and see if you think theres a reason one is a bit more expensive than the other and if it's worth the difference to you. It's a really individual thing.

Hampton isn't amazingly connected no- so if you need to commute every day maybe not the best for you. Had you looked at places like Woking and Guildford too? Very well connected and practical . I like Guildford a lot but obviously it's not in zones -

BettyBoopBetty · 22/06/2023 13:28

@Crikeyalmighty I don’t like Woking but I do love Guildford. It’s potentially an option, just the commute is quite expensive and houses are not much cheaper than the likes of Walton etc

OP posts:
Crikeyalmighty · 22/06/2023 13:40

@BettyBoopBetty Yep, I do get that.

BettyBoopBetty · 22/06/2023 13:50

@Crikeyalmighty what I have noticed though is that for the same budget, we'd more likely get a nicer property (ie same size and rooms but just prettier, think of a nicely refurbished period property whereas in Walton for example it'd be a more "basic" type)

roarrfeckingroar · 22/06/2023 14:46

If you want a lot of house for your money have you looked at Worcester Park?

Crikeyalmighty · 22/06/2023 14:49

@roarrfeckingroar I was going to suggest that too along with new Malden and the Whitton bit of Twickenham. Not necessarily pretty but very easy into nicer places and some good houses too

BettyBoopBetty · 22/06/2023 15:23

@roarrfeckingroar yes and I really don't like WP :(
We have a limited budget as are FTB, but I'd rather have a smaller home in a pretty place than a slightly bigger home in a place I don't like.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/06/2023 16:05

What's the budget OP and would you look at flats or maisonettes??

Crikeyalmighty · 22/06/2023 16:11

Also are you ok with a 2 bedder or does it have to be more?

I love finding things that might fit your bill and I've probably got a similar view too

BettyBoopBetty · 22/06/2023 17:10

@Crikeyalmighty budget is 500K ish (a bit more possibly but cannot stretch towards the 600K mark). Spacious 2 bed would be ok. Ideally not a flat or maisonette, no. I have found several options but am still researching the market really, it's more a matter of how many properties we like seem to be available in each of these areas.

thank you :)

Are you set on SW London? If you look around South London instead of SW specifically, you can get more for your money.

I think Reigate fits your criteria and has a few nice options within your budget. It's a very charming small town. Dorking is similar, though I'm not sure the trains are any faster (but they are more frequent).

The commute from Shepperton into Waterloo is risky unless your work is quite flexible. With only two trains an hour, you could easily be quite late to work if a train is cancelled. Also a consideration for nursery/school collection.

BettyBoopBetty · 23/06/2023 10:20

@Crikeyalmighty thanks so much for sharing these, very kind :) some of them I had already seen and I like actually, we just need to figure out what's best in terms of commute...

Crikeyalmighty · 23/06/2023 12:10

@BettyBoopBetty my pleasure- to be honest I thought many were pretty nice - not much cheaper here in the south west in the nicer places by the way!!
