What type of house is this? Does the outside of the house matter to you?

As in, does this style have a name or what period does it belong to? Personally I really don't like it, but am searching for properties and am seeing that a lot of these, although "ugly" on the outside, are actually often very spacious and gorgeous in the inside.

1960s period. I have one, I like it but appreciate it's not the prettiest (which is why I could afford it in my village)

Howtohideasausage · 20/06/2023 14:09

1970s houses. Usually quite spacious inside.

ICanMakeDecisionsWithoutMyTelevision · 20/06/2023 14:09

I would say they are from the 1960s or 1970s and terraced.

BettyBoopBetty · 20/06/2023 14:10

@Dildoslag yes, that's why they keep coming up in my search, more affordable it seems but also more spacious and with a lot of light coming in.

I think the style perhaps even spans late 50s-early 70s. I think (think) it’s called modernist.

Crikeyalmightey · 20/06/2023 14:12

It's a "modern" terrace. As you say, nice big rooms and generous garden. Much better size than a period property, though maybe not such good sound proofing.

Legaldrama · 20/06/2023 14:12

My favourite type of house. Big windows, lovely square rooms, well built. 60s terrace I'd call it.

Mine isn't spacious (I have a tiny gallery kitchen) but I have windows front and back in the living room which is much nicer than my old house. People want 'character' so these houses get over looked (and assumed to be council houses).

Yes, I agree. They're often very spacious and airy.

I think they'll become more popular in time.

Potatomashed · 20/06/2023 15:10

I was such a snob and almost didn’t look at this sort of house. However we now own one and it’s brilliant, we have zero neighbour noise, it’s solid and easy to insulate, bright and airy. Ours has a garage too and is just so much bigger than it looks with loads of storage!

LadyTemperance · 20/06/2023 15:14

I live in similar as for our budget this gave us the space we wanted. It was built on the garden of a posh house in a posh area. I love looking at all the pretty houses I can see and chuckling that the neighbours have to look at our ugly house.
Only downside of huge windows is it’s hot in this weather and curtains are expensive.

sunshinesupermum · 20/06/2023 15:20

Our first house was this style as pp said Span 1960s modernist. Fab house but we needed to upsize eventually.

Lcb123 · 20/06/2023 15:27

that's not ugly! It looks really nice. I don't get the fuss with period properties, so many problems.

BlueMongoose · 20/06/2023 20:19

I love 1960s. I'd be in one now if we'd been able to find one that had the other features we needed. Our 1920s one does have nice big windows (unlike a lot of 80s onwards houses) but it's much harder to heat than a 60s one would have been.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 21/06/2023 07:13

I don't think they're ugly. The original Span houses are very sought after in certain areas in London where they were often built as small private estates in the 50s and 60s with lots of communal greenery. Now fashionable again with the popularity of 'mid-century modern' styles. We looked at one near Richmond about 20 years ago; lovely and light but room sizes much smaller than we were expecting.

mybestchildismycat · 21/06/2023 07:24

Ah that makes me nostalgic, I grew up in a house like that! Huge windows and decent rooms, although it was a galley kitchen which I think was popular then. Best but were the gardens - both front and back - which where sooooo long for the size of the house. You'd see at least two or maybe three houses built on that size plot now.

Doingmybest12 · 21/06/2023 07:29

Embrace it. You get good space for the money and big windows.

Sunnyweatherwoman · 21/06/2023 07:30

Mine is uglier than that (80s) and I almost didn't bother at all. I'm very glad I did.
I think those ones in your op look quite pleasant and the front garden in the pic is as big as both of mine put together.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 21/06/2023 07:32

You don't sit outside your front door looking at your house! You mostly live in it. So I have always disregarded the outside and focused on inside and gardens. And anyway I think it looks lovely
And the front garden is wow!!!!

HerVagestyTheQueef · 21/06/2023 07:33

I also grew up in a house like this. Council house. Sort of anonymous in its row, but well laid out inside and, as per others, good gardens front and back, with path leading from back garden, too.
The other thing about these developments is that they are very well established in the area: good for buses, shops, and near schools.

Notellinganyone · 21/06/2023 07:34

I agree they’re fine inside but personally I always go for a Victorian terrace.

shivawn · 21/06/2023 07:38

I don't think they're ugly at all but I don't really like terraced houses (my house is terraced but I'd love a detached).

MangoBiscuit · 21/06/2023 07:59

My house is very similar. Bought after divorcing exH, so needed something affordable, and big enough for myself and 2 DDs. I love it! Spacious rooms, big windows, lots of light. Huge kitchen diner, huge living room (which is also currently my home office at one end)

The only time we had noticeable neighbour noise was when next door had to have their ceiling replaced, and even then it wasn't that loud. Relatively cheap to heat, as we're insulated on 2 sides, and also cooler in the summer for the same reasons. Although I expect that wouldn't be the case if we were south facing.

My only bug bear is that our bathroom is quite small, but we have 2 toilets elsewhere, so it's manageable.

CornedBeef451 · 21/06/2023 08:01

I grew up in one of those, it was fab!

I know they're not wildly attractive but you don't look at the house while you're in it!
