Has anyone got the house they wanted with the odds against you

To cut a long story short I live in a small village where you either have to build or wait for someone to die in order to move to a bigger home.

My dream home came on the market recently and so we jumped at the chance to sell and move.

Unfortunately another couple has also taken the same decision & the house has also had interest elsewhere.

So far neither the other couple or us have had viewings or offers (I've been on the market just short of a week, they have been on for two weeks).

I'm starting to feel a bit hopeless with it all so just want to see if anyone out there has stories where they eventually got the house they were after when they thought all was lost.

Oh we did! We did it by leafletting. A nice older couple liked our note; we made an offer at the top of our budget and we were willing to wait for them to find a place to downsize too. (Luckily our buyer was willing to wait too.) We all knew, I think, that they probably could have gotten more with an agent (we would have been priced out then), but we liked each other and they liked that the house was going to us; now they can visit their beloved home at any time.

So some ingenuity, luck and kindness might be the way forward (though hard, of course, if you have trouble selling your own house.)

All you can do is try your best not to invest more emotionally in getting the house than you absolutely must- remember if you don't get it you will need to accept it and move on. Some people on here have invested far too much emotionally in a house, lost it, and ended up thinking they have lost the one and only perfect house (it never is), and being unable to accept living anywhere else, which is disastrous.
Hope by all means, but be firm with yourself and train yourself in advance to accept it may not be for you; be realistic. If you get it, wonderful. If you don't, then write it off without looking back more than you can help. There will always be another good house waiting for you somewhere, hoping for a good owner.
Good luck.

(we lost two we loved through no fault of our own, the one we ended up with, not at all where I had originally wanted, we loved and lived in for over 30 years)

@whenwillitbespring Unfortunately the lady selling it is currently in a care home 80 miles away and her 3 children are dealing with it all through their solicitors.

Someone has already tried to make an offer on condition of selling their own property and it has been rejected.

That is a lovely story though about your home.

@BlueMongoose Very good advice and I really have been trying to get into that mindset today.

Yesterday I was in a bad place thinking about it and it just isn't worth it, especially when I have two under 3 at home.
