Constant building work/noise

Live in built up area outside of Glasgow and most houses pretty decent size but a lot of people had or having extensions so never a let up from building work. Once one house done someone else starts!
No consideration for people living around.
I thought that was reason why you buy a large house in first place but some of the extensions are ridiculous and just unnecessary but every time I'm in my garden there is some type of sawing or house improvements going in. Drives me up the wall.
Not jeslous would rather spend my cash on holidays but hate the fact that everytime it's a nice day someone else has got a power tool going so spoils sitting out.
Does anyone else eat sick of this constant need to have extensions?
One family in our road had a extension in back garden so their neighbour now looks at a big wall and a big extension upstairs so overlooks the people's garden.
Just box on top of box stuck to houses.
Look nice inside but s... on outside.

Agree. If I tried the world I'd change it. So many flat roofed boxes. Urgh

romdowa · 20/06/2023 07:31

My next door neighbour is constantly getting work done on her house. No extension yet but every week there's someone in there hammering and drilling. I'm sick of the noise.

Same
I sympathise as when I breathe sigh of relief someone else starts
It's never ending
When I was a kid this didn't happen

Yep, Every one of our neighbours (front, back and sides) have had extensions.

Early starts, working on Sundays and bank holidays (against local council rules) but never any enforcement.

It's not just the noise, there's dust everywhere. Also the tradesmen who don't care where they park, they block drives, block pavements, etc, and then are abusive when you ask them to move to access your own drive. And damage, we've had broken fences, damaged lawns/flower beds when they've driven or trampled over them.

Re noise, there's always lots of shouting, swearing, loud radios etc.

Both our immediate neighbours lived elsewhere during the works as they both said they couldn't do with living with the noise/mess - they don't give a toss about the noise/mess they cause their neighbours.

Our neighbour is always doing work to his house. One day scaffolders appeared and the following week a loft conversion van pulled up outside. We had non-stop noise for weeks on end. At some points it was so loud it was almost as if the power tools were being used in the same room we were in - no joke. You could hear debris fall between the wall cavities. We don’t have a loft ladder so can’t easily check our loft to make sure no damage has been done to the partition wall. They know we both work from home. Not once did they give us any warning about the works. Pure selfishness.

You have my sympathy. My neighbours spent month/years doing their house up at ridiculous times of night. We had a caravan at the front so often would just in there. They then had a baby and 6 months later we did a kitchen refit which took only a couple of weeks but they were round all the time complaining completely unaware of the hell they put us through for around 2 years. Now it's their 3 day drunk hot tub parties we dread every year where they have about 10 guests staying over

Years ago one of our neighbours had an extension and the guttering was twice the size of previous so we had to ask them to cut back. We tried to be nice to builder who neighbours thought the sun shined out of him but he was rude when they weren't about.......Also dropped cigarette butts in our garden him or his workmate.
Part of the wall of their extension came out into our garden only by about inch and half but we had so much hassle with getting the builder to cut the guttering back we didn't say about wall. That would have meant them maybe having to remove their extension 😬so we let that go and didn't mention.
Reason we said about guttering is even though builder was just saying its 'airspace' it can effect things if you want to sell your house later. We weren't been difficult should trying to think long term and we had agreed to extension not knowing this is what would happen. He should have known better. And our neighbours should have know better.
We tried to be nice but he was I'm not changing the guttering it as I will be moving onto next job. In end it was a difficult time for us caused by them and their builder.
We never got even a thanks for all the disruption it caused to us.
The problem is later on if we go to sell house whether that wall coming out into so called air space will cause us or them problems!?
It was shame as it caused tensions between us and neighbour and builder should have known better and neighbours to be fair.
We live just outside Glasgow and alot of people have had extensions but never saw any gutters the way the builder wanted to leave it!

When we've had work done, like blasting paint off the bricks, or reslating the roof, we warn the neighbours beforehand so they don't put washing out if it's a dusty sort of job that day, or whatever, and our workmen are careful and polite. And so the neighbours have always been fine about any work. And we get on very well, helping each other out with emergencies and so on.
House next door has just sold, needs a lot doing to it, roof wiring etc.. It doesn't bother me provided they deal with us as we deal with others- some noise and dust is inevitable. But hearing 2 builders pacing round the other day discussing things which sounds like an extension means I have my fingers crossed we get nice people rather than the CFs some Mumsnetters have had to endure.
They will need to put scaff on our property to reroof a leaky outbuilding if they want to do the job more easily. So we will have to see about that. If they do other things considerately, fine. If not......
