Kitchen Island

We are designing our kitchen and trying to decide the size of our kitchen island. We have quite a bit of space to play with. I was wondering if people could share pictures along with dimensions of their kitchen islands. Or any other thoughts on sizing.

That was an article in the paper the other day to say the islands are going out of fashion.

Apparently people want their kitchen down just one or two walls.

They have been everywhere for years now and were bound to go out of fashion at some point. I think they are OK if you have a really large space and don't have to be careful when you walk around it. I think they will date a kitchen badly though in 5 years time.

Thanks for sharing!

I’m not really designing for trends/fashion. I think the utility of an island is great in terms of informal seating, storage, food prep. We have the space so I can’t really imagine the space not having one when it serves a few purposes

Love my island. Great storage, it’s huge so we use one end for kids to sit and draw etc at. Guest gravitate round it when we entertain. I would agree that they are definitely less appealing in smaller kitchens. Couldn’t care less about whether it’s on trend or not… most house trends I hate anyway gloss kitchens and grey interiors passed me by.

We have an island in ours.
I had always wanted one and designed our kitchen on what I wanted and liked, not what's fashionable. I never have followed fashion though so maybe not best to ask Blush.

They are a great family congregating area IMO, our kitchen runs down one wall, the rest in the utility and then the island. I love it.

Same for us. Can’t imagine what we’d have there if not an island 😵‍💫 was thinking of a lovely big table but it will be too low to stand and prep food at and we have a separate dining area. All 4 kitchen walls have a window or door on so can’t use any of the walls fully. I also want to look inwards towards the room/children/guests rather than back to them while prepping and cooking etc.

Our island is going to have hob with downdraught and drawers on one side, and cupboards on the seating side under the countertop overhang (obviously to store things you won’t use regularly eg kitchenaid and slow cooker, and kids’ craft stuff etc). Masses of storage!

I have a split level island which basically turns my kitchen into a galley kitchen
