Help with front door colour!

I’m stuck on what colour to paint my front door. Currently the house has black window frames (which are not wood and can’t be painted) and black gloss paint on the front door and frame (see photo). The gloss is all chipping off so the whole door and frame needs to be re-done, though I would want the finish to be eggshell as I prefer it. I have a few questions:

  1. Do you think I need to keep the door black or can I go for another colour? I would love a dark blue or very dark green but unsure how this would look with all the black on the windows and guttering.
  2. The frame and door are currently painted the same colour but this gives a ‘T’ look to the front door, which I’m not sure I’m keen on. All the other house ls near us are not rendered around the door (just red brick work) so all have a lighter frame and dark door. So I was wondering if I could paint the door in, say, dark blue (like F&B Hague Blue), and then have a lighter neutral tone on the frame (like F&B Purbeck Stone). The render is not white but a creamy colour so I do not think white is an option for the frame...?
  3. If I paint the door another colour, should I also paint the garage door in the same colour?

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Personally I think it looks good as is, although the black/white contrast is very stark, it's elegant. I think introducing another colour but retaining black for the window frames and guttering risks it looking a bit patchwork. It looks like a lovely house.

I think you could get away with a reasonably bright colour if you do the garage door as well. I would steer clear of navy or dark green. A brighter green or red would be OK. It puts me in mind of one of those fifties Triang dolls houses which had green window frames.

Thank you both for your responses, I really appreciate it as I’ve been going around in circles! I think the impetus to change the colour comes from it needing to be done and using the opportunity to bring in a colour but my inclination was to stick with black or a slightly softer version thereof in an eggshell finish. Thank you!

What about a rich milk chocolate brown?

Thank you. I’ll get a load of sample and try a few dark colours out.

If you upload the photo onto dulux or crowne you can paint the door in various colours to see what it looks like. You may need more of a front-on photo though to do it. Not saying you would use their paints but it could show you what a bright colour would look like

That will date very quickly

Red! A deep, rich red to contrast with the dark frames. Not too dark, not tomato.

I can’t paste a photo for some reason but if you image search 1930s house front door or with red door and/or “black windows” , there are some examples. Looks really smart.

Leave the garage dark I think. You could echo the red with a few similar coloured pots, plant dark red flowers or an iron bench below the big window part painted in the same colour. Just enough to catch the eye but not so much that it’s a matchy matchy theme.

Thank you everyone, some great ideas that I will look into!
