Want to find a new area to live in

I'm looking go move away from the area in year UK that I live now. I'm looking for a totally fresh start in the UK and am looking for ideas for where to look for houses. I will be living with my mum and my four children little - teen. We are pooling together and can afford about 300 thousand and are looking at 4 bedrooms or three with the possibility of a loft conversion. I want to live in a safe cosmopolitan area with countryside and coast with very good local schools. I would really appreciate it if you lovely people could point me in some good directions. FYI I am leaving an abusive relationship and really want a good fresh start for us. I have a job that I can do anywhere but doesn't pay much so can only afford a very small mortgage of at all.

Liverpool/Wirral/Waterloo

Hoylake or West Kirkby?

At the other side of the country, Newton Abbot? Not maybe the most exciting corner of devon but not overly touristy compared to other bits of it and easy to get to Exeter

Possibly Whitley Bay, with easy, metro access to Newcastle. It would be the budget that might be an issue.

PuffinsRocks · 19/06/2023 14:40

I'd have a look at Aberdeenshire if you can go absolutely anywhere. But I'm also following with interest as we're more restricted in where we can live/work so I'm curious to see if any of the other suggestions would suit our situation.

Just along the coast from Whitley Bay is Blyth. They are building a rail service that links to the metro in WBay/Tynemouth and Newcastle. Beautiful coast, easy access to Northumberland countryside. Some deprived parts, some wonderful parts, like a lot of places. Big, beautiful park, wonderful for kids. Very short drive along to Whitley Bay (10mins). Worth considering.

We spent a week last month in Southport and I loved it there.

The large victorian semi detached houses looked a good size for that sort of price. The roads were wide. Easy access to coast (not sure they use beaches in traditional sense as water comes in fast) but flat for walking. Lots of golf (if that's your thing). Train ride to Liverpool which was fabulous. 90m drive to lakes. Don't know about schools. Friendly. Town a bit run down but thats like a lot of places now but the villages were lovely, like Birkdale.

Roughly where are you now OP- so we can avoid suggesting that area

gogohmm · 19/06/2023 15:02

You are mostly looking at me or ne England, parts of Scotland or Wales on that budget (assuming not Northern Ireland, no idea on costs there.

Teeside is an option, not overly cosmopolitan but there's detached properties in your budget. The beaches and countryside are lovely and costs are low

This is the second thread I've recommended New Brighton on today. I don't live there (yet) but it ticks all your boxes. It's in Wirral, looking out over Liverpool, with beaches, grammar schools and great transport links. Countryside 10 min drive, beach on your doorstep. Friendly too. Lots of this type of houses:

My favourite in the NE, with easy access to Newcastle would be Tynemouth but the house you need would be too costly for your budget.

Yikesno · 19/06/2023 19:23

Definitely agree with Birkdale!

Mumof1andacat · 19/06/2023 19:26

Hampshire. Not far from London. Near the coast and New forest. On the way down to the west country

strawberry2017 · 19/06/2023 20:12

Yorkshire!

Newliferequired · 20/06/2023 18:35

Thank you all for your suggestions. They have given me hope for a good fresh start.

I would also suggest south wales OP- unless you live there already!!

Mortgagewoes1 · 20/06/2023 18:59

New Brighton is cheap for a reason - utterly shit schools there!

The Wirral is great though just not NB if you need schools!

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2023 20:10

Something like this might suit OP- in Heswall - Wirral and a nice poshish bit too- I love Heswall- got friends there. Great links to Liverpool and the coast is close. Nice shopping and bars etc on doorstep too and it's 4 bed and looks in reasonable Nick too.
