Is this a problem with gutter, downpipe or both?

I had my gutters replaced three years ago with plastic ones and have for a while noticed a slow drip from one part of the gutter when it rains. Last night we had torrential rain and when I went upstairs to close my DC’s bedroom window, there was rainwater shooting in over the top of the opened window. I tried to look out at what was going on and the water appeared to be coming from the gutter itself (or maybe underneath it?) The downpipe, close to this area the water was pouring from, also had a flood of rainwater pouring down behind the pipe itself. I’ve attached a pic of the wall after the rain stopped, does it sound like this might be a gutter issue as opposed to a downpipe one? @pigletjohn or anyone else who can offer advice, I’d be grateful thanks.

Have you had your gutters cleaned in 3yrs? They could be full of moss etc as well as not clipped together properly.

Hi I had them cleared 18 months ago when I got a roof issue sorted. Well, at least the guy told me he cleared them!

The only way to tell is to get up there on a ladder with a hosepipe and see what's happening.

InTheCludgie · 17/06/2023 10:53

I've messaged a few roofers so I'll let them go up on the ladders! The worst part is getting someone to actually come out and look, tradespeople are a bit of a nightmare round here

You had the guttering replaced by not the down pipes? Most people would get the downpipes replaced at least down to the lowest junction.

It’s unlikely, though possible, there is an issue with the gutters, as they are new.
It could be a blockage or not enough downpipies, too steep a decent on the guttering causing it to overflow, etc.

That picture doesn’t really show what’s going on. Do you have a main roof gutter that is connected to the downpipe, and then the bay window gutter joins in? Or the main roof drains onto the bay roof?
A couple more pictures from outside the neighbors house also including the roof would help.

Tbh, my gutter cleaner checks them for me each year so that might be a cheaper and quicker option! Get someone with a camera on a pole. Much safer

Here is a pic taken further away which shows the gutter line and the neighbours, we both have our own connections to the downpipe

Someone needs to go to with a ladder but my money is on either downpipe or the drain is blocked and it's filling up and pouring everywhere from the top

C4tastrophe · 17/06/2023 20:22

The leak looks higher up than where your connection to the downpipe is.
But you’ve take the picture from the same angle again so we cannot see how the plumbing works.
Torrential rain, two roofs, one downpipe. With a big water flow, it’s possible the downpipe back filled if it’s blocked at ground level, or just a lot of water and hard angles forced it to leak.
The Camera on a pole Sounds good or Look our of the window next time it rains.

I can't really see it.

But it looks to me like the outlet spigot from the gutter is not aligned to the downpipe and a rubber connecting sleeve has been clamped on.

They should have been jointed with an offset using two of these (pic)

The gutter from the adjacent roof may also be spilling.

Some people specialise in gutter repairs. See if there is an established local specialist who has been advertising In the parish magazine or local paper for years.

Avoid anyone who conceals their identity or who has only a phone number or goes knocking.

Any builder or roofer can do it but needs a scaffold or cherrypicker. They are not supposed to work off a ladder at such height.

Or they could put a hopper on the downpipe and run the outlets from both roofs into it.

What happens at the bottom of the downpipe? My money's on it disappearing straight into the ground, and the pipe (or a soakaway to which it's connected) being blocked below ground.

Much better to have an outlet shoe on the downpipe with a drop into a gulley. This means you can see if there's a problem with the drainage there.

PigletJohn · 18/06/2023 19:26

Downpipes from gutters are (supposed to be) assembled with the spigot of each dropped into the socket of the one below, with no seal.

In the event of a blockage, water gushes out of the first joint above the blockage, so you know where it is.

Leaf blockages often collect at the bottom.

Yours appears to be gushing from the top.

See if you can borrow a pair of binoculars (or buy a pair at Lidl if they have any left)

InTheCludgie · 19/06/2023 08:28

Thanks @PigletJohn . So you think its likely a connection issue with the gutter to downpipe? Would that explain the water overspill at that end of the gutter? I was too busy freaking out about the water over my DDs bed to run out and see what was going on! It rained here overnight and the wall is wet again

It certainly might be. I can't see it clearly enough. Try from different angles.

You can get a clamp that holds a smartphone camera up to the eyepiece of binoculars.

PigletJohn · 19/06/2023 10:11

I've never used one but hear they are very handy.

Looks like you were right about the connection to the downpipe @PigletJohn - got home from work earlier after heavy rain to find water spurting out the connection and hitting the window. Not sure if it's cracked or there's a faulty join. There's also water flowing out a hole near the top of the pipe. Now to find someone to actually fix it! Thanks to everyone who replied.

Sounds to me like the downpipe is completely blocked. Is the base of the downpipe open so the water comes out, or does the pipe go down into the ground?
