What's a good quote for new internal door + decorating?

dreamingoaholiday · 16/06/2023 21:09

I tried to get 3 quotes for a job, 3 blokes let me down and never showed.

The fourth turned up, he seemed great. Friendly, professional and knowledgeable, not pushy.

He's given me a quote, and I want to just go for it,
but I have nothing to judge it against, I have no idea if it's reasonable!

Is anyone able to say what you think this job would cost? (SE England - but not a posh bit!)

Basically we have had a toilet out in and we need a new door putting on. The job is building a door frame, putting a new door in and decorating. The ceiling has a crack from a leak, ages ago and the walls need re-lining. The toilet is a standard small WC, nothing special!

The quote includes the new door, all materials and labour.

What would you pay for this? If anyone could give a rough figure I'd be grateful!

This is specifically what he's quoted on:

"Downstairs W/C: Build stud partition and fit plasterboard, fit door lining in wall and new bi fold 4 panel door.
Fit pencil round architrave and skirting to new wall
Strip lining paper where damaged and replace with new
Fill and sand down all walls
Repair crack in ceiling
Fill new plasterboard both sides
Finish all walls and ceiling in 2 coats of matt white emulsion
Finish all woodwork in oil based undercoat and a final coat of oil based white eggshell"

Hopeful bump!

Or if anyone has any advice on how I can work out if it's a reasonable quote I'd be grateful!

I'll get my coat....

Thanks!

Although I realise I have no idea if that's based years of experience or if you know as little as me but just plucked a random number out of the air!.😂😭

What's a polite way of saying, do you know what you're talking about?!

I'd say around £400? I'm in the North though.
Cost us approx £60 to hang a new door.

Is that including the labour, door, parts and the decorating of the WC?

OP posts:

It's not just hanging a door - they need to put in the frame to put the door on, there's never been a door there before

SunshineOnARainyDay3 · 16/06/2023 22:34

Yeah, I'd be so surprised if it cost more than that but equally, I'm no DIY expert! We've had a quote to partition a section of the garage to turn into an office which included partition wall, insulating and add a fake ceiling- the quote was approx £700. Your job seems less so thays why I'm going for £400!
Some people will give you approximate quotes using images via Facebook. You might be able to get more quotes that way??

Without seeing the space I can’t decipher how large an area is being painted and how much the space needs adjusting - is it square or with weird angles etc

4 panel bifold door suggests a considerable opening? What makes you want a bifold? Lack of room to open outwards?

What wood is being used? Skirting/architrave/door. Massive difference between price of mdf and oak. Everything from all the hinges to the handles included?

I would want to be totally sure of what they were buying - I had doors fitted by a very famous door company and when I read the blurb I found they’d only used 2 hinges per door when the door manufacturer clearly stated they needed 3. I imagine the worker couldn’t be bothered to create the additional hinge space cut outs etc.

I would very roughly guess that it would take 2 days to do it.

I had an opening turned into a stud frame. Then lining fitted and normal Victorian reclaimed door 30 inch wide hung. It took a day. No painting. My carpenter charges 300+ vat a day. South East.

Products - who knows. You haven’t been specific enough!

Oh sorry, the 4 panel thing is a bit misleading. It's just decorative that it has 4 panels on it. That's a red herring!

The actual door just folds in 2, it's a bi-fold. It's the size of a standard door, but it folds in half.

It's because there isn't room to open a standard door into the WC, and outwards it'd bash the front door.

The wood will be MDF. This is a practical, cheap and cheerful job. We live in an ex council house, not a Georgian mansion.

Everything is included. All labour, materials, the door, paint etc.

He's quoted just under £900, including everything. Does that sound about right?

OP posts:

The door is 2'6" wide.

That's cheap - very cheap. I would bite his hand off

mondaytosunday · 16/06/2023 23:21

Yes that's sounds ok. The door itself won't cost much. How long dues he reckon it will take? £250/day plus materials seems about right.

johnd2 · 17/06/2023 07:28

900 sounds alright to me, everything costs an arm and a leg especially in the SE. I don't think it's a "I don't want the job quote" ( all quotes sound like they are nowadays)
Even a bit of 8 foot CLS stud costs 4 pounds nowadays, once you add in the cost of the finished wood and ironmongery, doors aren't cheap even from selco etc, and sounds like it includes all the decorating as well.

No one wants to feel like they're getting ripped off, but I think with only one quote the thought process is first can you afford it, and second if so is it worth that amount to have a door on your loo!
Good luck.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 17/06/2023 07:32

I would have expected a fair bit more than £900. If he comes recommended, I would definitely accept that.

He didn't say how long - that would have been a good question to ask, wouldn't it!

My husband, the builder says that's bang on. His own estimate was about £1200.

For your builder that's 3 days work and only paying himself a day rate.

I liked the guy, he seemed easy to work with, and I have a bunch of other jobs to do after this one, so I was really hoping the quote was reasonable.

Your chap definitely isn't taking the mickey, which is the bottom line, really.

And if you've got a good feeling about him, then that's a bonus.

Share some pictures when it's lovely and new!

That sounds very reasonable
