Moving to whitby - pros and cons

Hey all
Just looking for some experiences of locals who live in whitby.

We are fortunate enough to be able to wfh and have decided to up roots from city life and move to the seaside.

We both love whitby and have been in cold wet January's, easter breaks and summer holidays so know its either dead or everyone from the uk is in town so it seems to be the natural choice.

What we don't know is the realities of actually living in the town full time.

Those who live there already (anyone?) whats it like to live there all year round, pros and cons as the more we know the better.

Parking wont be an issue as we will get a drive and no children so we don't need to worry about keeping them busy and entertained.

TIA

I'd look at Robin Hoods Bay - it is exquisite

Lived in a nearby village a few years ago and Whitby was my main shopping town, it was a total mare in the summer, totally rammed, could never get parked and the pubs/ restaurants were always booked up. Loved it in the winter but not enough to put up with the summer. Great for a visit but not for everyday life.

So were you not visiting as a tourist?

yes, of course I was. Doesn’t mean I want to sit wall to wall with other tourists eating fish and chips in tourist traps. I like to try and experience where locals go. Don’t you?

Riverlee · 15/06/2023 17:33

Went to Whitby a couple of years when on holiday in the area. So my tuppence for what it’s worth.

lovely scenic area, and a very good fish and chip shop.

gets very, very busy with tourists.

Don’t know what it’s like to live there.

I haven't lived in Whitby but grew up in another North Yorkshire coastal town so can give some perspective

Pros:
Glorious scenery/ Countryside
Great for walking, cycling etc
Peaceful for much of the year (but not bank holidays, summer hols etc!)
Easy access to beaches/watersports

Cons:
Its a long way from motorway network if you want/need to regularly visit other places in UK
A64 can be a nightmare and it's hard to avoid if you want to go anywhere
Nearest airport is a couple of hours drive
Not very cosmopolitan and there are defo more racists in rural N Yorks than average

As far as deprivation, fights, crime etc I don't think it is any better or worse than most places and will depend which area of town you pick

Have family in Whitby and visit regularly. As previous posters have said the visitor numbers and lack of parking in Summer are an issue but the scenery , history seaside etc are great. There are several decent restaurants and places to eat and drink. It's not all fish and chips, though those are very good.

My biggest issue would be access to health services apart from a GP. Elderly relatives have had appointments at Scarborough Bridlington YorkMalton Middlesbrough and Northallerton in the last year. Nothing takes place in Whitby.

The nearest bank is Scarborough.

Really ive been a few times on hols, loved the pubs ect ect never encouted any drunks, or fighting last there 2020

Ladychris · 31/01/2024 07:33

Hi thanks for message, the only thing that bothers me is public transport as i dont drive, places like york, scoughbough seems the best places to shop, buses seems the best .

I grew up near Whitby. Now live in another rural bit of North Yorkshire
It’s a nice town. Still has a nice high street.
I like the seaside in winter.
There’s a decent swimming pool in Whitby
I liked being near Whitby.

No where in North Yorkshire has a manned police station at night apart form a couple of places.
We once had to call the police in the early hours and it was luck we got one within 10 mins because he was nearby.

Hospitals. Whitby hospital is minor injuries and outpatient appointments and possibly an oldies wars. Most people go the Scarborough for standard stuff. Anything more complicated has to go to a specialist hospital which would be James cook, hill royal or Leeds

Bay and bottom of Staithes are almost all holiday lets.

Id go for it. You know it’s small town life (I live literally in the middle of nowhere )

Love love love this part of N.Yorks. Have been a regular visitor in and out of season, several friends who live in the area, and so seriously considered moving there. Decided against it. Was the amount of time I would have needed to spend in the car to do routine stuff, apart from food shopping.

Ladychris · 31/01/2024 11:44

It depends on the village some are well served others not so.
If it’s the coastliner service that’s the main bus. That was threatened with closure not long ago. Whitby Scarborough won’t be cut and I think there’s a decent Whitby Middlesbrough bus. Although the train is great for that
Last year the north york moors railway had an annual £40 ticket but I don’t know if that’s running again this year.

It’s probably best to visit for a few days and try some of the bus routes. There are community transport schemes as well.

shreknjumps · 01/02/2024 15:25

The atmosphere was pretty charged last time I went out in Whitby. Don't get me wrong, I love it but I don't think I'd move there. Felt rougher than it has in the past.

Ladychris · 02/02/2024 11:31
