Clothes storage

1930s semi - with chimney breasts in place in the master room on the first floor. We also have a large bay window.

currently we have two small wardrobes in the alcoves but honestly that isn’t enough space for my clothes. I honestly don’t have loads but have work clothes, casual, a few dressy things, things that are size 8/10 that I’m hoping to wear again…

we also don’t have anywhere for our laundry/linen

In a couple of years we will do a loft conversion but I want to sort this clothes situation out now.

just wondering what people do for wardrobes/storage.

the sharps units are too expensive - is there a better, cheaper way?

also do people have any neat storage ideas for the bay window? For clothes and linen/bedding storage.

thanks so much

My dd has a really small bedroom and there was no way we were fitting a wardrobe or anything like that in there with toyboxes etc. So we decided on a ottomon bed that lifts up and it holds so much and saves so much space.

Thank you! We could do that in the master as well as the nursery

I guess I would just be curious about what people have found helpful for storage in these 1930s houses which are all fairly similar in design

Eg getting some type of wardrobe space In the alcove is a no brainer but that’s not much space because of the chimney breast. And the bay window is huge but we can’t put a wardrobe in that space due to its height.

We do full height wardrobes, 1 long hanging with shelves above and below, and the other half hanging and 4 drawers lower half. Shelf above for linen and ottoman bed for out of season wear

How wide are the alcoves?
The usual trick is to use IKEA Pax wardrobes and have a carpenter build them in so they look original. Use the inner fittings to max out the space and get the taller ones if you can fit them in.
Loads of examples on pinterest/youtube etc.

In all honesty, we didn't really love the ottoman bed for storage. It's awkward to get to the clothes in the middle of the bed - it's only convenient around the edges. Also, the clothes under the bed tend to get dusty - it's definitely not a good replacement for a wardrobe imo.

However, ottoman beds are excellent for storage - so ideal for out of season clothes, especially if you use vacuum bags etc.

I don't have any helpful solutions re the chimney breast and storage as we are about to move into a house with the same issue, so following with interest!
