Cost to mow a small lawn?

If you have your lawn mown- what do they charge per hour? We are Sth East and this is not a horticulturist nor a trained gardener. Trying to work out if the quote is reasonable for a lawn that would take 15/20mins to mow.

I pay £15 to have a small lawn mowed every two weeks. It takes him about 10 minutes.

mondaytosunday · 10/06/2023 14:23

I'd say £15-20. Not worth it to anyone to charge less. If it's their equipment they have to transport it and pay for insurance and maintenance, so it's not just the time they spend actually doing the lawn.

Lovestodrinkmilk · 10/06/2023 14:35

£16 for the job, not per hour, two small lawns. No rubbish removal, no weeding.

CC4712 · 10/06/2023 16:11

They have another customer in the next street, so he isn't solely driving there for our place.

@mondaytosunday I very much doubt he pays insurance! Good point to check though.

£25-£35 depending on the site access, parking etc. The gardener says £25 is his minimum no matter the size of the lawn. He has all the equipment and fuel, travel time, petrol, loading, unloading, disposal of clippings, tax on earnings etc etc.

Baldieheid · 10/06/2023 16:31

You have to factor in overheads, as each client will pay a small proportion of those costs. Van cost, insurance, fuel for his mower, maintenance of and replacement of equipment, waste disposal costs and licenses, etc. Same as a retailer or hairdresser, for example. Their overheads are no more important than a gardeners, the gardeners are just less visible as he works in your garden, not a salon.

DH charges £20 min for a lawn, and for that he usually takes an hour to strim the edges neatly and properly tidy up. Otherwise he works for a daily rate of £200.

Leo227 · 10/06/2023 17:17

£25 for me also includes some basic weeding / shrub trimming as and when needed.

naughty40me · 10/06/2023 17:36

I pay a company that do my lawn every 2 weeks at £18 a time.

Its a big lawn. 2 men, one uses a mower, and the other does the strimming at the edges.

They only take 10/15 mins max.

Worth every penny to me as it would be a big struggle otherwise due to health issues.

How much is the quote?

He wouldn't tell us the rate- just said pay what you think its worth! We paid £15 and he is now grumbling about it!

I'm a childminder and I've had a parent haggle my school pick up fee before as I was already going there to pick up other children......errr it doesn't work like that!

Pay appropriately or do it yourself.

LubaLuca · 11/06/2023 10:32

I think £20. That's what I pay the window cleaner, and it takes him about 15 minutes to do the lot.

HouseIsOnFire · 11/06/2023 10:37

I pay 30-40 once a month (with weeding)

BungalowBuyer · 11/06/2023 10:43

I pay £27.50 every two weeks, but that's for a lawn, two big hedges and basically keeping the garden tidy.

Two men, their own equipment but they use my green bin. Takes maybe 30 minutes.

Fretfulmum · 11/06/2023 19:47

£25/hour. In that time he mows the grass, strims edges, and ensures everything is tidied up. The remaining time will do some weeding/pruning.

Fretfulmum · 11/06/2023 19:49

I forgot to say mine won’t come for less than an hour. I think that would only work if say several houses on your street were using the same gardener for mowing and they just went from house to house over the course of a morning. Otherwise I can’t see it being worth their while

Hillrunning · 11/06/2023 20:33

£15 is low. I'd say £25 minimum with grass left in your bin.

CC4712 · 11/06/2023 20:40

@Fretfulmum @KateyCuckoo - He is cutting the lawn in the next street also. It was HIS suggested to do them both on the same day to cut his travel costs- which is fine with me.

I certainly wasn't trying to haggle a price! He never gave us a price, hence posting here to ask what the average is.
