If not, how long was it delayed by?

Yes, but it was finished and had been sold to someone else before, then they pulled out, so wasn’t due to be finished a day before we moved in or anything like that. I know other people on the same estate whose dates did slip. Not massively, but a week or two.

Ours was bang on time! Reserved it 6 months before the expected completion date. Was told an approx two week period that we'd complete in and we actually got it at the start of the two week period rather than the end as we expected. We were thrilled and it's gone without a hitchSmile it's so hit and miss with new builds but we've had no real problems (so farGrin)

Ours was very delayed. They would only give a very loose estimate (one red flag among many) but exceeded even that by over 6mo, i.e. exceeding the long stop date, which meant both parties could have pulled out then without penalty. It also meant our mortgage offer expired - we were incredibly lucky (especially considering current climate) that the bank agreed to extend, otherwise we would have had to pull out. It was a very stressful time and I would not recommend it, but we never thought we'd be able to afford a house this size in this exact location, and it really is all about location... if we'd lost it, we'd have been a couple of miles away (mainly relevant to school run) and in a much smaller house for a similar sort of budget. I do believe the builder would have been happy for us to pull out as they'd have been able to put it back up for sale at a much higher price - so while there have been all sorts of issues, in some ways we've been very lucky.

Thanks all, it’s good to hear some success stories as I’ve heard some nightmares (like TravellingJacks!).

I can live with family until it’s ready but I’m porting my mortgage which means I can only have 3 months gap between selling and buying, hence the concern! I’m currently allowing for a month delay and it’s a well respected local builder so should all be ok 🤞🏼

They said end of August and we moved in on 28th August.

boboshmobo · 10/06/2023 11:29

It depends on the weather , ours was a month late.

Pinkflipflop85 · 10/06/2023 12:10

We were delayed for 6 very stressful months

Hoppinggreen · 10/06/2023 12:12

We did.
It was part finished when we bought it, the person who bought it off plan was having difficulty getting a mortgage and it was the last house in the phase sp they were keen to finish and sell it.
We px as well so it was very easy

ThreeB · 10/06/2023 12:17

Nope. Was originally October but we moved in on 23 Dec and only then because we signed a waiver. It was the day that the level 4 lockdown was imposed and we had nowhere else we could have gone.
In hindsight, I wish we'd waited till it was fully complete

Cupcakequeen75 · 10/06/2023 13:20

Ours was reserved off plan with a proposed completion date of 12-months later.
They stuck to this date until 3-months from completion when they first brought it forward by a couple of months before then dropping back again.
In the end I think we completed in 11-months instead of the proposed 12-months.

RedBonnet · 11/06/2023 09:29

We reserved in August, told we'd be in by October. Actually moved in the following March and only because we threatened to pull out as our mortgage offer was about to end. We first viewed the house the week before we moved in. The whole process was a complete nightmare. Luckily we were living in rented although it gave our lovely landlady many headaches too. This was persimmons 5 years ago.
