Constantly running toilet 🙉

We had a cartridge replaced on our leaky bath yesterday. Since then the toilet upstairs is constantly running with water.

We have a hidden cistern as it’s a small bathroom and have never accessed it since it was installed 5 years ago.

Am I right in thinking that we will need to do this to figure out what’s going on?

Does anyone have any top tips or suggestions?

Usually a hidden cistern has a concealed way to access it (eg the tiled lid has a groove that's only sealed with mastic, not grout, so you can cut it away to maintain the toilet and then reseal when finished)

Morning @YukoandHiro so it’s an odd setup. The cistern is hidden into a section which is in our room with a wooden shelf over it, but it will likely damage the paint and mastic if and when we remove it so was trying to figure out a way to avoid this. I appreciate that may not be an option 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hmmm, it does sound like that's the only way in, unless there's a secret access point from the bathroom that you don't know about ?

You really need to get this sorted asap. A running toilet landed my friend with a £700 water bill.

I had a leaky toilet and the issue was the plumber hadn't put the silicon on properly at the bottom of the cistern where the bottom of the new flush thing attached.

He came round and sorted it out and it was fine after that.

As the plumbing is possibly related it could be whatever he's done to the bath cartridge to fit it into place needs to be sorted out ie new sealant

Just call the plumber

If you have a water meter and you do get an excessive water bill as a result of this, most water companies have a scheme to adjust your bill downwards to reflect the water lost while the leak was occurring. You may need to show a plumbers invoice to prove that the leak was fixed and post leak meter readings to show your normal water usage with no leak in the system.

We have had this with our toilet cistern and it generally means a new part or something has come adrift and causing the cistern to constantly fill. DH usually fixes it quite easily so if you can get to it you may not need a plumber but it does sound like the innards of the cistern so will need access

DaveRocks · 08/06/2023 06:34

Can you access the cistern from the flush point? That’s where our concealed access point it our toilets. Take the flush panel off, and can access the cistern. Appreciated this may not be the case with yours but worth checking
