Possible to build double garage or will it piss neighbours off?

My DH is obsessed with getting a house with a double garage . He's a petrol head and needs to house his classic car and motorbikes. Double garages are like hens teeth around here, ive seen a property with a large drive some of it has been grassed over. The internal garage has mostly been converted with a bit of storage space so wouldn't fit car. My plan would be convert the remaining bit of garage into a small study put in window then remove the grass at the front and build the detatched double garage sideways there's no wall separating the neighbours drive. I'm worried it would piss them off as it could block some light is it a total no go?

They'd have theor chance to object when you put in planning permission surely?

Do you want to build it in front of the existing building? You might not get planning permission for that.

Unicorn2022 · 07/06/2023 13:50

I'd be extremely surprised if you got planning permission for that.

I think building forwards from the current property line is tricky to get permission for.

These days it seems pretty much anything you will do will piss your neighbours off.

Probably better to figure out what pp will actually let you do first.

It would definitely need planning permission, and unless the house is set back a long way from the road you are unlikely to be granted PP.

Planners would consider the impact on the neighbour, the impact on the streetscene and highway safety. If the garage blocked the view of neighbours trying to exit their properties, or obstructed the view of pedestrians it would be refused. Additionally there would need to be room for cars to access/exit the garage to/from the road in a single manoeuvre, usually in a forward gear in both directions. This would require a very large area in front of the house - a double garage would be 6m x 6m in size as a minimum.

A diagram would be helpful but building forward of the property line is most likely a no. Drive ways have to have visibility for cars to exit which is why there is a 1m height rule for adjacent to a highway fences or walls. I would speak to the planning department about it but be prepared for a no.

Too much of a gamble to base a house purchase on, neighbours aside.
