Putting the oven in the pantry?

Currently have a large range cooker with 7 burners and 4 ovens. Looks lovely but we've never needed 7 burners and only ever use one oven (apart from the odd occasion), and since we've had a Ninja the oven is rarely needed. As part of a renovation we're getting new units so thinking of getting an induction hob and a built in waist/eye level oven. The only place I can find where the oven won't dominate the room is in the pantry (see drawing - yellow squares are skylights). Is this a mad idea or a neat way of hiding it away?

I think if you’re going to do this (I have. my fridge freezer in the utility and it totally works for me) you need to look at where you have worktops around it, both in the pantry and in your kitchen. Worktop in the pantry is ok, but it looks like a fair distance to worktops in the kitchen which could be an issue for carrying heavy hot food…on the other hand if you reckon you’ll only need to do that 3/4 times a year, and you’re ok with that, then it could work.

My kitchen designer had kittens at me putting the fridge in the utility, but he didn’t know that my parents’ house was set up like this and it’s perfectly normal for me, so not an issue

Can you just get another oven?

Questions to help you think it through-

Is there adequate ventilation?

Will the oven heat up the pantry (not ideal in a food storage area) - check how well it’s insulated. But also the impact of hot air in that space when you open it.

Is there space beside the oven to land a hot tray?

I’d be concerned about the safety of carrying hot oven trays between pantry and kitchen if you’re crossing a walk way.

Waist/eye level oven is great, but if you hardly ever use it, it might be a waste of a high value space in your kitchen. I wouldn’t place anything at this height that isn’t accessed multiple times a day. (I put my dishwasher at this level and it was a great decision)

@Forestdweller11 - trying to 'future proof' the kitchen, would rather have a higher oven for when my knees/back give out!

@Begonne - good point re ventilation. The pantry is mainly for dry/tinned foods and there is a window but will think about an extractor fan.

@Whatthediddlyfeck - it's only about 1.5m from the theoretical oven to the main worktop and there will be space at the side so shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah, I think that would get hot, sticky and gross. I'd rather get a smaller range and try to put it elsewhere.

I’d think this was odd TBH, but if it works for you and you’re not selling then go for it. Although I don’t think it would dominate the room if you put it on the back wall and to me it would make more sense to have it there and maybe move some more food/ crockery storage to the pantry?

Reasons would be as unthread, will you have space around the oven to put hot dishes, won’t the pantry get hot/ smelly, and quite a bit of walking around and across a thoroughfare with hot food.

Jamie Oliver did a cooking show with a lovely eye level oven, I’ll see if I can find a pic.

This is the one I meant (behind Jamie to the right) and I don’t think it would doninate?

Oooh - love the colours! He has food stored beside/above the oven...
