Relocating

Hey all.

My husband and I are looking to relocate. We currently live in a big city. The area we’re in is nice enough but it’s no longer what we want. It’s busy, noisy, polluted. Most of the open space is being built on.

We’re looking for somewhere quieter, calmer, with more space and nice countryside nearby. We have a young child so would need a school nearby and other essentials.

Budget is around £400k-£450k. We’re open to the entire UK as we can work from home. Preferably a detached house with some decent outside space but appreciate our budget won’t stretch that far in a lot of areas!

Suggestions would be most appreciated! I’d love to hear from those of you who have done the same, or are considering doing so.

Thank you :)

What does decent outside space mean to you? 100ft? Half an acre?

Do you need access to lots of shops or not bothered?

Are either of you going to need the odd office visit, and if so, where is that?

Do you hate new builds or the estates they are on or not bothered?

Is pretty countryside fields and hedges or is it rolling countryside with high peaks and pretty streams?

Do you prefer the warmer climate of the South East or are you hardy enough to cope with the less warm North?

Do you have committments to be able to get to elderly relatives or similar in a particular county?

Hard to start with options without quite a bit more info.

Might be worth starting a new post with a more descriptive title to encourage more replies.

Hexham in Northumberland.
In budget.
Incredible countryside.
Great schools.
Lots to do in the town (shops, leisure centre, cinema, theatre, art gallery etc etc)
Trainline to Newcastle or Carlisle.
I discovered it a few years back and honestly think it's the best place to raise a family I've come across.
(Yes there are a few empty shops on the high street - but it's got so much going for it in comparison to other places)

Hi OP how exciting. I moved from a large inner city where I was born and had lived for 44 years. In the end I found it dirty, congested, lots of crime and run down and craved a different life. I moved to Shrewsbury two years ago and adore it. Enough going on to keep me happy, my teenagers love it, stunning countryside on the door step, great people, great quality of life, decent affordable housing, great schools, lots of independent shops / cafes / restaurants, quirky place with a lovely vibe. I couldnt recommend it highly enough. I also love that it is not affordable - although prices have risen sharply over the past 2 years you would still be able to afford something nice for your budget. The wider Shropshire area is stunning too with lots of houses with land - good luck with your search!
