Garden gardens a bonus when selling or do they put of FTBs?

When we moved into our house the back garden was paved from fence to fence along the whole length. There wasn’t one plant in it, just a broken bench and a few plastic pots with nothing in it.

it became my project to transform it, and it’s become my little tranquil space to relax in after a long day at work.

We’re now selling. In your experience do you think it is an asset / helps a property sell, or as it’s a FTB house, would it scare them off thinking about having to look after it? OH and I have wildly differing views - not that there’s much we can do about it!

I don't think you should pave it. That'll put off most people with animals. I would never buy a fully paved back garden because of our cat. Well, I suppose I would consider one, but with a view to pulling it all up if it was the right house.

My gardening skills are very limited but as a FTB I wouldn't be put off with the amount of work I perceive that garden needs; not much to mow, a bit of pruning (with a stepladder?), watering?

I would be wondering why that wall to the right is 80% painted though 😛

It's a charming space.

Gardens are definitely a bonus. A bit of green space outside is useful for kids or pets. I hate gardening but love sitting outside.

Justbetweenus · 28/05/2023 17:23

I’m not a FTB so not your target audience but I’d love that a lot more than a concrete yard. You’ve done a lovely job. Could you make a folder with a list of what’s in the garden and how to care for them - when they need pruning, what does back over winter but grows again in spring, etc.?

Justbetweenus · 28/05/2023 17:23

Grr. DIES back …

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 28/05/2023 17:23

Looks like a massive selling point to me!

Littlethingsmeanalot · 28/05/2023 17:24

Honestly most folks have gardens if they have a house. So they will be viewing other houses with gardens, so I think neither here nor there. If they didn’t want a garden they could buy a flat. But really if they are looking for a house then they will all have gardens,

That’s reassuring thank you - I guess I was thinking people renting either flats or houses where the landlord looks after the garden.

Definitely an asset. If any future buyer panicked at the thought of gardening, they can pave it, not you.

bilbodog · 28/05/2023 17:26

Lovely garden OP - should help you sell! Good luck.

That’s very rare in most rentals rhe garden Maintenance is the tenants.

it’s also a small low maintenance garden, so I can’t see anyone being worried

LL's don't look after gardens in rental houses. It's always in the lease that the tenant has to do it.

Only really flats with communal gardens where an annual charge is paid for someone else to mow the lawn, etc. My last flat lease said I must take care of a garden if there is one anyway, shrug.

I despise concrete, and turf. I'd only ever view a proper garden & I'm your demographic.

That’s a good point. Hope they don’t pave it, but up to them.

I'm a FTB who is desperate for a garden! Yours looks lovely. Quite a few houses on where I'm looking have paved yards/gardens and they put me off a bit because I know it would take a lot of work to turn them into the kind of garden I'm looking for. Keep your garden as it is, it's definitely a selling point!

When my DD bought her first house a few years back a garden was top of her list of priorities. It is deffo a selling point.

Don't pave or gravel it, it will be such hard work getting it back to a proper garden, definitely an asset, it looks really nice

Thanks! It took SO MUCH work. And with no rear access wheeling barrow after barrow of slabs and hard core out of the house was not fun - glad to save someone else the job!
