Punished for being homeless

Unfortunately we live in a rough area in a tower block having previously been used to an entirely different standard of living. We can’t sustainably afford private rent but will be living here until we are offered somewhere to live. We get people knocking on our door at all hours thinking we are someone else then realising they’re at the wrong one, which is unpleasant enough. But then I also get people who think my flat is theirs and they will attempt to get in, one has actually forced the door open which was absolutely terrifying. I have had people follow me back and theyll come to the door shouting and swearing and banging ready to fight thinking I am someone else, or thinking I am done something, one woman thought I was after her husband who I’ve never even spoke to, even if I am the wrong person no one should be going to anyone’s door like that. I enquired about seeing the CCTV footage they didn’t even bother to reply, if this was private renting or a housing association no one would put up with it

Who owns the building? Chase up your request, take it higher if you need to. Keep a diary of incidents and report them to the police and council.

I wonder if putting up something on / around your door would help curb the cases of mistaken identity - a sign with "welcome to the Smith family home" for instance.

It doesn't need to be anything fancy - just a hint that this isn't Roger's flat, or indeed their own.
