Council tax

We intend to sell our house and move in with a family member while we search for another, between 3 to 6 months hopefully. Does anyone know if we’d be liable for council tax while staying ther?

No you will not be liable for council tax, but if the relative is solo occupant they will need to inform the council that they are no longer elegible for the single person discount of 25%

If you still own the house but are not living in it whilst living with relatives, you will still be liable for council tax, but you can apply for the unoccupied rate, which only lasts a finite time, something like between 3 and 6 months iirc. Check with your local council.

Make sure you have proof of leaving: mail redirection, proof of cancelling broadband/energy accounts etc.

Once the home is sold you have no council tax liability.

Remember to cancel your TV licence as soon as you move in with your relative. Getting refunds after the even from them these days is tricky, so prepare in advance. They may also ask for proof.
