I have some weeds outside my wall, and I dont mind dealing them, but I was jsut wondering is it my responsibility? or as it is not my land, is it down to the council...?

(I'm probably going to clear them myself anyway, just curious)

I am not sure of the answer technically however if this were my wall I would remove them myself

The LA have no money and I would spray them and them remove them in a few days time

Job done 😉

I just see to my own outside the front wall on the council owned pavement. No one is going to object 😀
I remember years ago the council would send men out to spray them, but that's long gone.

Technically it would be the Estates Team at your local council but in reality if they don't have the budget they just won't do it. Many don't even have a contractor appointed for this type of work as budgets have been slashed.

Pull them up yourself and pour a vinegar water solution over the cracks to kill them off. Its a couple of quid and 10mins to you or you can report to Council and wait a few years if they ever show at all.

yeah I really dont mind sorting them out, I was just wondering

(vinegar and water? )

The council spray them once a year where I live (which annoys me a bit as I like to manage them!).

I tend to pull up the "ugly" ones and try to nurture others - I have intentionally seeded poppies and forget me nots there hoping they'll grow.

megletthesecond · 23/05/2023 19:08

The council sometimes sprays them but I've asked them to not use weedkiller around my house and have cultivated pretty "weeds" like poppies and love in a mist around my house.

White vinegar, salt and washing up liquid mixed together will sort the weeds out.

Espritdescalier · 23/05/2023 19:12

I love them! Poppies, evening primrose, cranesbill...all extra flowers for the pollinators and save havens for small animals or insects in the road. Let them thrive!

caringcarer · 23/05/2023 19:24

Councils do you have the budgets for important things like education and social care so not likely to be moving the weeds from your house. Everyone I know just does it themself.

Theraffarian · 23/05/2023 19:28

We clear our own , but over the years my plants have self seeded the pavement side of our hedge and wall and currently I have flowers running all along the outside boundary , will be very sad if the council decides to start re spraying weed killer now !

BonesBrennanz · 23/05/2023 19:38

Well it’s your wall that might be damaged by certain weeds, though as others have said it would be nice to encourage wild flowers.

Jesus, that's a 5 minute job. Have some pride in the place you call home!

My grandparents moved into council housing after being demobbed after the war (and a spell in temp accommodation), I have seen pics of the whole street in absolute pristine condition, hedges planted and trimmed, lawns manicured (all by hand), veggie patches galore, all done by the tenants. I took a drive up their Street a few months ago and even the bought houses look like shit, nobody has the pride of a couple of generations ago.

I think you missed the "I'm going to do it but was just wondering"

Did you need some help removing the stick from your butt?

I would assume Council too but they won't do it. I have recently discovered that pouring boiling water (from kettle) is a very effective form of weedkiller 😃

Soontobe60 · 23/05/2023 21:14

Lots of LAs dont remove them now as they don’t like to use weed killer anymore. It’s bad for the environment!

StillWantingADog · 23/05/2023 21:16

Don’t use weed killer. It literally kills all kind of tiny creatures unnecessarily.

pull it out.

Clementineorsatsuma · 23/05/2023 21:38

In my old house I used to have a phantom weed puller upper... but they just used to scatter them so at totally inconvenient times I would have to clear up a soily mess off the pavement!
