Natural Swimming Pond

Does anyone have a swim pond, or know anyone with one. I love the idea. Just wondering if the reality is a good as they look. I've been looking at properties with pools indoor and outdoor but the ongoing costs are huge and they are, to be honest a bit ugly in most cases. A natural pool sounds awesome (if expensive)

Thanks

So basically, a swimming pool full of stagnant water that you never clean ?

Over time the "natural" pond will get natural - ie full of algae, fly larve, frogs. insects, pond weed and various other lovely stuff that is fine to have in a pond, but not so fine to swim with. I know because I have one. I guess you could build up tolerance to that sort of stuff over time.

I would not swim in it and sounds like a bit of a gimmick to me.

They are not low maintenance.
They still have filters and they still have a degree of cleaning required.

Leeches. If that word on its own doesn't put you off, then you're good to go. You're unlikely to get any that would bother you, but you will get the smaller ones that live on the wildlife in a natural pool.

I've stayed somewhere with a natural pool,it was amazing and I would love one myself,I'd be in it all day !

Check our Grand Designs Chichester.

Do you have a river on your property? Really you'd need a watercourse to make a natural pond.

Handsnotwands · 19/05/2023 16:15

they are not stagnant leach ridden pools of death. they have carefully balanced and managed planting that filters the water and keeps it clean

my garden pond has no filtration or algae, it is a well balanced ecosystem

i'd love one OP but we live downhill from a chicken farm and were advised the run off would compromise it's success :(

I'm guessing those of you disgusted by the idea are not wild swimmers 😁

It sounds a lovely idea if you have the space, OP, and much better for the environment.

If I remember correctly the one on Grand Designs cost them 100kGrin

A large house near me, with 5 acres, hzs a 'natural swim pond '. It has just been sold. I think when it was previously up for sale years ago it just had a pond so something must have been done to it.
(My house is nothing like that one!)

We have a large pond. I hate it. It’s costing us a fortune to get rid of it! Grass snakes swim in there… so it was either destroy the pond or burn down the house and move 😂

What is it you hate about it?

A friend of mine had one of these. It still took some maintenance, to ensure that the 'right' plants were growing to keep it clean, but the company who installed it did that. I also remember there was an issue with flying ducks, apparently their 'output' is not good for the eco system.

But the pool was so lovely to swim in and the water gorgeously soft. It was like swimming in silk!

No idea how much it cost but quite a bit, I suspect.

Thanks for the opinions! My research tells me that they are warmer than an unheated outdoor pool which was a suprise. I love the idea of a clean clear pool to swim in with planting around the edge. Makes it fun for the summer but still good to look at in the winter. I might have to research more if I'm going to add it to my dream self build 😀
