Guess the stain

A fun game to identify what the hell this crap all over my house is.

We moved into a new build 6 months ago and there are orange stains all over multiple window and door frames in our house. The builders have been spectacularly unhelpful as it wasn't reported straight away but none of the marks were visible until a couple of months after completion and they've got darker and darker to the point it looks disgusting.
I'm guessing it's some sort of solvent/cleaner that the window fitters have used but it won't come off. Advice on what it might be/good cleaning products appreciated.

Sorry but that just looks just awful for a 6 month old new build. My PVC windows are 20 years old and look pretty much pristine. Are you sure it isn't an animal urinating on it ? i don't see what builders would do to make it look like that.

I would try some IPA. Always try a small amount of the cleaner first and see whether it helps without damaging the surface. If not you might find a 50:50 mix of IPA and water works better. I sometimes use those pan cleaning pads (the yellow sponge ones with the green plastic scourer on top) to clean off marks on the PVC. Don't use anything too abrasive or rub too hard or you will scratch the PVC.

I also got some special PVC cleaner for the outside of the conservatory and that worked really well.

Yes sorry dark, but it looks like a dog may have pissed against it

Does it smell?

sayanythingelse · 17/05/2023 17:40

Thanks for your replies.

It's definitely not an animal as it's inside and we don't have any pets. It's all over the windows, not just at the bottom. It's also dotted in random places around the house such as on top of the ensuite toilet as if someone has put a bottle or cloth down on top of it. There's no smell from it.

I agree though that it looks awful. I've tried cleaning it with household products but it obviously needs something a bit stronger.

Have you tried Cif or a mildly abrasive cleaner? that is often a wonder worker.

Do you have anyone in your home who uses one of those massive vapes that billows tons of clouds?

I cannot think how else something sticky would end up on both windows and loo seat.

inappropriateraspberry · 17/05/2023 22:07

I wonder if something was used and/or spilt during the build and not shown up? Then has developed a colour as it sits exposed to light? Something like bleach or other cleaning products can stain yellow.

Lacquer turns yellow with time. Any wood work around?

sayanythingelse · 18/05/2023 10:42

Nope. No smokers, vapers or woodwork around. Until we decorate, the house is completely white and grey. We have 2 young kids but one wasn't born when we moved in and even the other can't make that much mess.
It's definitely some sort of product that's been splashed around as the are visible drip marks in some places. I've ordered some pretty strong looking uPVC cleaner which is coming tomorrow, so we'll see if that works.

If it doesn't work, I suggest knocking at several neighbours doors and if they have the same issue, group together to get the builders to do something.
