Experience of rendering over pebbledash?

We’re buying a 1930s semi and we’d like to cover or get rid of the pebbledash exterior. I guess options are to remove, paint or render over? I’ve seen this product - OCDC (one coat dash cover) has anyone used it and would it cause any issues in the house - like damp for example?

Thanks for any advice or tips especially on that OCDC stuff as it sounds ideal but maybe too good to be true!

One Coat Dash Cover (OCDC) - 25kg x 40

One Coat Dash Cover (OCDC) is the perfect solution for covering up old pebbledash. Purchasable in pallets of 40 (25kg) bags.

Not used but live in this type of home and many have tried to cover it but it falls off the wall if disturbed. It's costly and looks a bit shit tbh. Better to get the pdash repaired or painted, which is again a cost that needs repeated every few years. A couple of houses rerendered and painted cream with dark grey/black window frames but I hate it. Very generic. You grow to love the dash when you see the alternative! Just be prepared for it to be alot more than quotes.

I haven’t heard of the product, but we had lots of chats with people when we were in the same position. Absolutely everybody said you can’t cover up Pebbledash with another product because it gets heavy and eventually just pulls everything off in bits. Unfortunately you can’t smooth render over it either. The only way is to get somebody to remove the pebbledash which takes about 2–3 days and then they have to repair any scuffed bricks underneath.

I feel for you – I think it’s really ugly and although we spent a lot of money on removing ours, I’m so glad we did.

The pebble-dash on a nearby house is almost a hundred years old and still in good condition. Our house had its render painted five years ago but the gulls use it for target practise and it's splattered with reddish crap. I would stick with the PD as the alternative might be worse!

We are SW London where there is a lot of pebbledash and lots of houses around us are having it removed and replaced with smooth render. I'd be very dubious about just going over it with something because if it was that easy, surely noone would bother going to the faff of removing? We are planning on just painting and freshening ours up and see how everyone else's looks in a few years to decide if its worth it!! 😅

@NoIncomeTaxNoVAT yes I agree - I wondered if it was maybe a new thing just invented (wishful thinking haha) whoever does invent a cheap solution for this will be a millionaire I reckon. Do you mind me asking have you done much research into paint yet and what are you going to use? Do you have to go for a dark colour to cover it properly?

thanks@Spanielsarepainless @PTSDBarbiegirl and @sellotape12 yeah I’m too nervous to try this stuff unless I find some good independent reviews which I haven’t yet!

@Lorralorr we have not started thinking about paint! Weve just finished a loft conversion and repainted the whole house so havent the brain space for outside yet 😅 Currently the front and back of our house is magnolia but the side is unpainted. Im hoping just to go over it all with a white / off white shade.
