My son has just witnessed a car being broken into near our home in broad daylight and I think it's time to perhaps to improve our home security but I don't know where to start.

We have a Eufy video doorbell which we've never been particularly impressed with so I'm keen to start again. Please can your recommendations?

Get good locks that can't be snapped and doors that can't be kicked in. Cheap eurocylinder locks are easy to break.

Keep your windows closed when you go out.

If you have dark places outside get motion activated security lights for night. Use bolts/sash blockers on every door that you can.

Make sure you lock your side gates so no one can easily get in.

Don't leave keys in the locks, its easy to smash a window to break in. Don't have thumbturn locks, but keep keys handy near non thumbturn ones because of fire risks.

In crime, you normally make yourself a victim. If a burglar walks past your house and sees huge open windows at the front with curtains billowing in the wind and an unlocked side gate, then they might walk round the back in the hope of finding an easy open back window to get in.

If the house looks like an impregnable fortress from the front, they will probably move on to somewhere easier.
