Internal door broken mechanism HELP!

pinkcheesy · 16/05/2023 20:05

Internal door is closed, can't open.
Taken handles off and spindle out. The internal bits that hold the spindle in place have collapsed and broken so I can't use the spindle to retract the door latch.
Can't use a credit card/paint scraper because the latch is closed against the door frame.
Without destroying the door, is there any way to retract the latch by using a tool inside the hole where the spindle goes? I have a wide variety of tools!

Thank you!

See if you can undo another know and use the spindle from that one to then open the door

Another knob** that's meant to say

You need to push the latch back in the door from the edge of the door, you can see enough of it to get some kind of tool on it/ round it. ? Or maybe drill a small hole in it then get a terminal screwdriver and try and push it back ?

its doable you just need to persevere with it.

pinkcheesy · 16/05/2023 20:20

It's not the spindle that's broken, it's the internal bits that fit around the spindle to make the 'square' spindle fit into the round hole.

Not sure what kind of tool would do that? It's a very small gap. The latch is the 'wrong way round' to be able to use something like a paint scraper to push it in.

What would I drill the hole in? The metal latch?

Can you get a screwdriver in by the latch where it goes into the doorframe to lever it back?

daffodilandtulip · 16/05/2023 20:59

Can you saw down through the latch?

I solved exactly this last week op. With a cable tie. YouTube it. So simple...

Diyextension · 16/05/2023 21:18

If you have a link to fixing that with a cable tie I’d like to see it ?

If you have a multi tool ? You could slowly cut through the latch with it ? Or maybe a Dremel and just grind the latch away ? It looks like there is enough gap at the edge of the door .
I have both and probably only use them once every blue moon …… but when needed they are handy to have .

Are the hinges on your side and f the door? If so, unscrew hinges, open door that way.

Wouldn't the hinges only be accessible if door fully open?

Diyextension · 16/05/2023 22:30

Another thing to try might be to put your weight on the door ( lean ) that might loosen a bit of pressure off the latch and you can try pushing it back with a scraper or screwdriver .

Privacylover · 17/05/2023 09:15

Cutting the latch with a grinder or multi tool is your only option. New lock is needed anyway. Just be careful not to hit the frame or door with the disc-blade and wear goggles 😎

Yes you may be right, there is hinge visible with door closed, but mine are so painted over I can't see if there is a possibility to dismantle them without opening the door.

Hope you got it sorted out without too much destruction OP.

I our house, I'd first attempt to push the door firmly and see if it opened - half the doors are so ill-fitting they'd open without any damage to the door or frame. Failing that, I'd be attempting what @Privacylover suggested. You would need something like this Einhell Multitool Kit 14 Piece Accessories 300W | Toolstation. Use a blade meant for cutting metal. It could take a while!

"In our house" that should say.

pinkcheesy · 17/05/2023 19:16

All fixed - ended up bending the strike plate and chiselling away a bit of the frame so I could lever the latch out. Minimal damage and an open door!

Thanks for all suggestions Smile
