Is hiring my neighbour a terrible idea?

I live next door to an electrician -we're friendly with them and will say hi if we're both outside at the same time but that's about it.
I have some electrical work that needs doing, I don't think it's a big job but I could be completely wrong.
My gut is telling me it would be weird if I hire my neighbour to do the work but is it weirder if I don't and a different electricians van is parked outside our houses for however long?
I'm definitely overthinking it, but we only bought our house last year and neither of us are going anywhere anytime soon, so I don't want to make things awkward!

I wouldn't. Honestly it will be more awkward if things were to go pear shaped, l wouldn't mix business and friends

Asparename · 15/05/2023 15:01

Nope don’t mix your neighbour with work. I’d ask for recommendations on your local Facebook group, and watch out for people recommending their friends and family. There’s a terrible plumber in our town who is always recommended by his family when ever anyone asks.

I agree with first Poster,

Look elsewhere

Don't bother with neighbour electrian, !

Can you amagine how arkward, tricky if things didn't go to plan wrong.@cmmumm

Agree with second poster , find out with friends family arctiquiences, work colleagues ect

I used to work in the building trade. I did work for friends and neighbours with no problems. If your neighbour is a registered electrician ask him to.quote for the work if his price seems OK use him.

Our next door neighbours son did our new bathroom and all was fine. We obviously got a quote first and checked his previous work via his business page. We have since moved house and he has done some plumbing work at our new house too all fine. So as long as the neighbour is registered and reputable and you aren't expecting a discount it should be fine.

Neighbour over the road did my next door neighbour's extension. Their kids were at the same school, all had lived here for years ... ended up with the builder moving out (and then selling) and pulling his kids from school because he did such a shite job.

But I reckon you'd be already with an electrician, if he's recommended by someone you know.

These mixed responses aren't helping! 😂
He's very reputable and a fairly big business from what I can tell - I might speak to his wife next time I see her and see whether she thinks he'd be up for giving his a quote or recommending someone else! I'm half hoping she'll say he's got a long waiting list and then it's a none issue

It's already a non issue! If you don't feel comfortable using him then just hire someone else - you're over thinking this!

There is no way he's going to have any expectation that you should hire him for electrical work just because he's your neighbour.
