Open plan En-suite- has anybody seen this before??

A house I’m thinking of viewing has almost everything I want, but has one feature I’ve never really come across before. The En-suite is behind a chest height tiled wall in the master bedroom, rather than being a separate room. Has anybody had this? I’m a bit perturbed by it but also don’t know if I couldn’t live with it if I loved everything else about the house.

That sounds gross.
Toilet smells, no privacy and shower steam would make the bedroom damp.
I would only buy if I had the money to rip that nonsense out.

HotelNotPortofino · 15/05/2023 10:31

Yes

Seems to be very popular round here about 10-15 years ago, either half wall or open archway.

Very odd, but thankfully quite easy to change.

Except when we were renting, then we had a no using the loo in our en-suite rule!

beeskipa · 15/05/2023 10:34

Easy enough to stick a stud wall in, I'd think.

I wouldn't leave it (the damp alone would stress me out), but it wouldn't put me off if the rest of the house was perfect because it's a relatively easy fix.

CatsOnTheChair · 15/05/2023 10:36

Yes, they exist round us - tho usually not with a loo.
A new wall would be the first thing being added to the house - but I would buy it if everything else was right.

Barold · 15/05/2023 10:37

I’ve encountered something similar in a rented apartment on the French Riviera (full height wall though) and it was bizarre to me!

It was fine for a night time wee and I just used the other toilet the rest of the time. For showering, I wasn’t really fussed.

BillyNoM8s · 15/05/2023 10:40

No idea why anyone would want this. See also having a shower cubicle just plonked in the corner of the bedroom. I don't know when walls fell out of fashion but I'd be factoring in the creation of a room. Does it have a toilet?? Confused

Londontoderby · 15/05/2023 10:41

So the toilet is just in the bedroom?
Putting a wall up would be my first job!

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 15/05/2023 11:43

Sorry, I’m working so have been away. Thank you for all your replies, a stud wall would definitely be something to consider.
To answer some points ;
Theres a toilet.
There’s no shower, but there is a bath.
There is a full shower room downstairs.
I would be the only person living there.

I think I’m going to book a viewing and see what I think.

For one person, never to share the room but D Cuz bought a house with this and they put a door in on moving day.

MaybeSmaller · 15/05/2023 18:56

Sounds utterly grotesque. Even if I was the only person to use the room, I would want a firmly closed door between my pooing arse and the pillow I lay my head down on to sleep.

Should be easily fixable by adding a stud wall and door but you'd also need to check that the ventilation from the ensuite was adequate.

rainraingoawaay · 15/05/2023 19:05

My mum had similar when she bought her house! She put a stud wall on top of the half height wall, with a frosted glass panel in (so still light) then two full height glass panels on the side bits (with doors in).

ILoveToSquanderPromise · 15/05/2023 19:06

There's a house near me that has two of these and a toilet off the dining room as well - like, right next to the table, although that at least has a door. In nearly every photo of the house you can see a toilet. It took ages to sell and was on with two agents at one point.

gogohmm · 15/05/2023 19:13

Easy enough to change if everything else is right including the price factoring in renovation

This is what I am thinking- there is a window in the En-suite area, so the glass would help to preserve the light in the bedroom.
I’ve emailed the estate agent for a viewing- it’s very close to my work so I took a walk past today.

If it was just the sink and the tub I could understand that more but having a toilet in your bedroom is pretty grim imo.

Who wants to have their morning poo in front of their partner? Gross.

SarahSmith2023 · 15/05/2023 19:21

I've seen a few on tv (reality) programs. I don't see the point really, but living alone I wouldn't have a problem with it.

i would put a shower in though, only having one downstairs would bother me a LOT more!!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 15/05/2023 19:53

You say there is a window in the en-suite part, is there another window in the bedroom as well ? I was thinking it would be OK as long as you added a full size partition wall and extractor fan, but if dividing it off means your bedroom would be dark would be a no for me .

Duckskitbank · 15/05/2023 19:55

I’ve seen several similar set ups in France but never here.

Spanielsarepainless · 15/05/2023 19:57

I saw this once and thought it a horrible idea. As is a free-standing bath in the bedroom.

NCFThis · 15/05/2023 20:15

Had seen one house exactly like this. But we are family with young DC, wouldn't work for us. It had a shower toilet and basin.

CatsOnTheChair · 15/05/2023 22:14

If the only bedroom window is in the ensuite, don't do it. The bedroom needs a window.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/05/2023 22:23

I've seen one where there was a shower in a recess in the bedroom - with no curtain or door!
If it's the right house, right price and right location then you should go for it. I've turned down houses in the past for reasons that I now see were daft. This should be easily fixable.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 15/05/2023 23:06

There’s another window in the bedroom, plus it’s built into the attic (double upper) so would be easy enough to eventually get another skylight put in if I wanted more light.

OP posts:
Twiglets1 · 16/05/2023 06:44

I've seen it in trendy hotels, not in a house.

Would never buy a house with this feature unless it could be changed without too much expense.
