Slimline or full size dishwasher

There was a thread recently about having two dishwashers and a couple of people we know have had two put in when they re-did their kitchen.

I still don’t fully understand the advantage of doing this but I don’t want to regret not doing it so I am exploring the possibility.

One option is to have two slimline (450mm wide) dishwashers rather than two standard size (600mm).
Having one of each would look odd on our run.

Is there there a significant difference in capacity between the two from real-life experience, rather than manufacturers’ quotes on capacity? Particularly as we would have two dishwashers and not be relying on just one slimline.

If we decided that this was just profligate and just to have one, we would stick with a standard 600mm.

TIA!

Do not get a slimline unless you can't possibly fit a real sized one in
Get a proper one that you can put plates and pans in.

We moved and there was a slimline built in. For 2 adults it goes on once a day unless I'm baking. With a house full (5 adults) it's on twice a day. The real pain though is that it's too small for the big baking trays and roasting pans.

I'd go back to one big one if we had space. In fact we are going to plumb in our old standard one into the utility.

"I still don’t fully understand the advantage of doing this but I don’t want to regret not doing it so I am exploring the possibility."

it's just to avoid unloading and putting away. Unless you have loads of space and money, I wouldn't bother.

Slimline dishwashers are a pain as they can't hold anything at all big - in this case two halves do not equal a whole.

Pippipumpkin · 10/05/2023 16:42

I have a slimline (just one) and it's only me and 2 small children who are with me 60% of the time. Whilst it can fit pots and pans, larger pans take up most of the bottom rack, so I normally handwash big items to leave space just for plates. When used this way it is still on either every day or every other day. It works ok for us as a fairly low-use household, but as a pp said, get a full-size dishwasher over one (or two) slimlines and put things away.

I love my neff slimline dishwasher, 2 adults plus 2teens. Cook from scratch most days. Goes on once a day and is Properly full. On the bottom go your plates and the cutlery basket at the front and the rear but can fit a small aga baking tray plus a couple of saucepans and bits, top shelf for mugs, cereal bowls, etc. I will always from now have this size. If we have a houseful of guests, I run after breakfast with all that plus any left overs from late evening, then it's clear for later.
My bil has a full size that him and his partner run when full every few days when they've run out of plates, minging.

GasPanic · 10/05/2023 17:30

Dunno. But I had an old Kenwood full size one and never used it.

Replaced recently for a Bosch and it is fantastic.

It does not have a cutlery basket, but a kind of grid on top that you push the cutlery in. It works far better than the basket IMO and seems to get everything really clean, including dried on stuff. I do use Quantum ultimate tabs though.

I would have thought that running two slimline loads is a lot worse from an energy perspective than running 1x full load. Plus of course the tab cost.

I have two slimeline. One in the kitchen and one in the utility. Mine have a cutlery tray at the top. Loads of room for a days dishes etc. The second one is used if we have a people over for dinner.

TheOtherHotstepper · 10/05/2023 18:08

We thought we could get away with a slimline as there's just the two of us. We can't. I'd always go full size in future.

crosstalk · 10/05/2023 20:30

Still washing dishes here in tiny kitchen after moving from bigger house with massive one. While I'm consequently doing things for the environment including no stuff going into water with contaminants, saving energy etc I'd go for one big one just because it would be effectively storage space.

Whether to get a slimline or a full size dishwasher depends on the number of people in your household, when you are in, and what you tend to cook/use.

I got a slimline because it was just me there as one of my friends had a full size when it was just her. She ended up having to run it half full to avoid it being minging.

There as when I was in a houseshare with 3 of us we needed a full size which took a max of a day and a half to be full. Due to the cost of the stuff in the house everything ended up in the dishwasher, there as with my friends and myself we all have items we don't put in the dishwasher as they would be ruined.

IsGoodIsDon · 10/05/2023 20:41

I have a slimline as not enough room for a normal sized one. It’s better than I thought it was going to be but key was to have a 3 drawer for cutlery at the top. I can fit most things in it. Sometimes it does go on twice a day though. Depends on what we cook.

I would just get a normal sized one it would be handy at Christmas time or if you host lots of party’s but surely for everyday use 1 normal sized dishwasher is enough

BHRK · 10/05/2023 20:43

Get a normal sized one if you ah e space

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 10/05/2023 20:47

not answering your question at all, but

Have you seen the drawer ones? https://www.johnlewis.com/fisher-paykel-dd60ddfhx9-double-dishdrawer-integrated-dishwasher-stainless-steel/p3465281
im intrigued how good these must be for £1700!!!

Spanielsarepainless · 10/05/2023 20:59

DH and I can fill a slimline in a day. It takes everything from glasses to saucepans. I cut a dishwasher tablet in half for it.

BarrelOfOtters · 11/05/2023 07:53

Just Dh and I and still run it full most days. Put pans in it as well. Chose full size as cook for 6 or 7 most weekends and have friends round too.

id never have a slimline one if I had room for a full size. I also wouldn’t have 2. Using one as a cupboard…..?.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 11/05/2023 08:02

People having 2 dishwashers are just for lazy people who don't want to empty the dishwasher every day and who have massive kitchens. Most normal people have a full size one that goes on at night and emptied in the morning. Just get a full size one and forget all this 2 dishwasher nonsense.

Thanks everyone for your comments - lots to think about, definitely first world problems but when you are spending money, you want to spend it right.

@VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji - yes, I looked at this and IR looks ideal, albeit £££, but unfortunately it won’t work in the space and reviews are mixed.

I may look into rearranging some of the cabinets to accommodate a slimline dw for everyday use and a full size one for weekends when we batch cook (and use both when we have guests).

@OhhhhhhhhBiscuits
I am all for being lazy and making my life easier, as we both work >60h/wk in high risk jobs and have two children. I won’t apologise for appearing lazy. Even if we weren’t in that situation, anything that helps ease the chores is a win for me.

2 Slimline dishwashers won't make your life easier though! You won't be able to put big trays or roasting tins in them, so you will have to wash them up by hand, so defeating the object really. Just get 1 normal sized one!
