Hi All,

My partner, our two year old and I are considering relocating to Stevenage, as house prices are affordable compared to London. But here comes the but...I made the mistake of googling crime rates in Stevenage and I was appalled by the results, and not a single good word has been written about the town. Is there anybody on here who lives in the area can provide some words of assurance, and what is it like to live in Stevenage, school reviews etc.?
I am looking forward to read your replies.

Thank you

Stevenage gets a bad rep. It's fine. The town centre isn't pretty but it has all the shops most people need, there is a great choice of out of town retail and a big new M and S which is great.
It's brilliant for travel to London and Cambridge and for the A1.
It's also great for nearby towns that are considered nice. Hitchin, St Albans, Welwyn garden city all very easy to get to.
It's surrounded by nice countryside for walks and two stately homes nearby-knebworth and Hatfield if that's your bag-knebworth is really good for kids under 10-excellent adventure playground.
There are some very decent drivable pubs and restaurants. The Farmhouse at Redcoats, Tewinbury Farm and the Lytton Arms are favourites with us.
Stevenage old town is lovely. It's got a touch of the north London about it and lots of decent bars and restaurants.

There is a big Leisure park with more chain type restaurants on it as well as cinema , trampoline park, indoor golf and bowling. My teens and tweens like it there.

Some bits of Stevenage are a bit rough, same as any other town. I would avoid, Sheppall, Chells, St Nicks. If you can afford the new build that is going up all over the place or the areas it's in if you prefer an older house, then you're on to a winner. Great Ashby, Bragbury End, Old Town, Knebworth, Woolmer Green (last two a bit further out but good buses and Knebworth has its own station). Of the more ex LA estates Broadwater is ok.

Stevenage is amazing to cycle around if that's your thing. It's all linked by a series of cycle paths. One thing they def got right with the planning way back when.

I've lived and worked in a lot of the 'nicer' towns near Stevenage and tbh I've found Stevenage to be friendlier and more down to earth. We've never personally experienced crime.

If you want pretty and a more admired address then it's not for you. But we enjoy living there much more than we thought we would. We moved there out of necessity due to blended family situation and it worked geographically and for my work which is at the Lister Hospital and DH who commutes to London. But we have surprised ourselves by really liking it!

Schools I can only comment on secondary. My Dd has done her GCSE's at Barnwell. It's recently upgraded to a good ofsted and we have been fairly impressed with it.
I think the standard isn't generally outstanding across the town, but it's all rated 'good' and is going in the right direction towards outstanding for when you will need it.
I've friends with kids at Barclay and they really rate it.

Should add you deffo get more house for your money. We have a 5 bed house with a huge garden and if it were just 5 miles away in Hitchin it would probs be worth 1.5 million quid. We got it for about half that.

Stevenage is OK. Not the prettiest of places or with the most history, but it is functional and very handy. It isn't a status thing to say you live there and people I know who do often qualify it with a more detailed location signalling they live in a better part of Stevenage.

The retail park is good and is walkable from the town centre. Huge Curry's, Halford, M&S, B&Q, Smyths Toys etc. I'd avoid the town centre though. The football team gives some occasional excitement, and it is possible to afford tickets for the average worker. The theatre attracts some top comedians. Many of the kids parties we've been to over the years involve something on the leisure park. An easy failsafe venue.

Train station is good for fast trains to London and the North.

It has a John Lewis. I visit it often!

Delphium · 03/06/2023 12:51

Stevenage does not have a John Lewis. The closest one is Welwyn

DreamingofTimbuktu2 · 04/06/2023 19:24

It’s fine, perfectly safe if a bit uninspiring. Old town nicer than the new. It definitely doesn’t have a John Lewis though. Transport connections are good with some fast trains to the east coast and Scotland stopping.
