How would I change this shower?

Hopefully the image attaches! This shower is old and useless, so I’d love to update it (don’t have funds to do the whole bathroom so this is a good interim). Can I change the shower myself or will I need a plumber? Maybe even just changing the head if doing it all will be too much myself. Thank you!

How good a shower is usually depends on how good the water pressure is to the bathroom. Test that first. Where does the hot and cold water feed in from?

We have a tank in the bedroom (same floor) and I’m trying to work out what the pipes do/where they go?! All the showers I’ve been looking at don’t have the pipes exposed like that so it’s hard to work out how I’d fit something new.

It’s more that it’s just very old and ugly as opposed to an issue with the pressure, so I’d like to replace it with something more beautiful!

Okay so husband has clarified, cold water tank in the loft (right hand pipe) and hot water tank in the bedroom (left hand pipe).

You'd need either a plumber or a good DIY person to change the cartridge unit, that's the bit with the dial on it, but changing the shower head is easy, just buy on from somewhere and swap it out, they're all screw on fittings.

I thought it was strange to have the pipes on the outside of the wall! Thank you for the advice, I think it may be a plumber job to get the pipes back behind the wall and a new cartridge installed. So for now, I’ll just change the shower head haha!

Have you descaled the shower head recently?

I would try and minimise costs if you intend changing the bathroom eventually. For instance chasing pipes into the wall and retiling is expensive and then doing it again in a few years time. A good plumber might have some cost saving (but improving functionality) ideas.

Which is why I suggested the exposed bar fixing kit so a modern rear fed mixer could be fitted with the existing feed pipes.

Those pipes are always going to look awful though imo
