Would you replaster this ceiling? (Photos)

House is 130 years old and it moves with the seasons. We had the upstairs landing boarded and plastered at Christmas and there’s already a hairline crack at one point.

This room is the dining room. We really want to get on with getting it decorated and functional, but DH is adamant we need to get it boarded and plastered. It’s a good size room with tall ceilings but has this crack either side of the central light fitting.

I think it’s a waste of money as give it a year or two and I can guarantee there’ll be another crack elsewhere!

Who is right?! 😁

Depends how you feel about and use your space of course, but I have some of these and we don't bother with them. I notice them but I expect guests not to spend much time gazing at my ceilings.

No I wouldn't, just needs filling and painting.

GretaGood · 03/05/2023 11:09

I would leave , my house is same age / who on Earth stares at the ceiling assuming it’s nicely decorated - answer no one.
im sure all our ceilings are like that.

We got lining paper put over ours (curved ceilings and didn't want to square them off) and it looks great

My house is 1903, and has plaster and lathe ceilings in most rooms. I was adamant I was going to have them over boarded and replanted, when I moved in. I haven't bothered due to a combo of cost and "who cares anyway". What I have done is repainted using Zinsser Ceiling Pro 5 in 1 Paint, which I swear by.

SilentHedges · 03/05/2023 13:57

Repainted not replanted 🤦‍♀️

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 03/05/2023 14:08

yeah, agreed.
we have a slightly mobile older house and hairline cracks are par for the course. I am now a friend o' lining paper.

Thanks so much everyone.

I hope this isn’t a drip feed but I totally forgot to mention it: we also wanted to add coving back into the room. DH feels we shouldn’t go to the expense of that without having a perfect ceiling.

Off to Google the 5 in 1 paint!

With lining paper, can you see the edges?

No I was shocked at how neat the lining paper is, we did that instead of replastering three rooms. Probably decorator dependant.
Having said that, we had some bits just skimmed, and that looks good also

Lots to think about, thank you!

Ive had a lathe and plaster ceiling collapse, fortunately I wasnt in the room but it crushed a bin so I wouldnt have wanted to be under it. Is it holding ok, not sagging into the paper? If not its probably fine. I did have one of mine redone and it looks great, but if you want it done properly you need to remove all the old plaster (which is a filthy job) and then board over the bare lath and then plaster.

BumWad · 03/05/2023 19:51

No i wouldn’t

Got a similar age house and we’ve just filled a much bigger crack than that and put some thick ceiling paint on - can’t even see it now.
