Ikea Pax for hall help please

I'm about to paint our hall after a big clear out and am intending to buy this to put all the 'stuff' in, including my bags and coats, which never seem to have anywhere to go!

Would you go for Harvik sliding doors or Forsand hinged doors (38cm deep, 2 x 50cm wide, 1 x 100cm wide frames).

We want white so it kind of disappears into the walls, and it is the cheapest option.

I have added pictures of Forsand hinged frames, can the handles be on either side? They look a bit weird on the 50cm frames both the left, I kind of like symmetry.

Or with the Harvik sliding doors, might they be a nightmare to assemble, would we have to bolt the whole 200cm width together and are there any attachments/holes to do this?

Picture of are hall is pre-painted, but finally cleared all the stuff out and got it ready!

How wide is the hall?
I think I'd do sliding doors to minimize the space required to open doors in what I'm guessing is a fairly narrow space if my hall is anything to go by!

Caspianberg · 02/05/2023 13:28

Isn’t that going to be right on the way of getting up and down the stairs? It’s looks really big for a narrow hallway

Netcam · 02/05/2023 13:36

More pictures, sorry, no it's quite wide, it gets wider as it goes back. We used to have a 220 x 40 shelf unit in that space. The size wasn't an issue, it just looked very cluttered because everything was open and everyone dumped stuff on it! This will be 20cm shorter and the same depth.

Just adding, shelves near front door are 40cm deep and that is the narrowest part, it gets wider as it goes out.

Distance from shelf unit near door to bottom on stairs is 280cm, we will only use 200cm of that so there will still be 80cm length at bottom of stairs.

The sliding doors look very wardrobe-y and might be a bit weird in the hallway.

Have you looked at those hallway units?

Sorry, I know that’s not what you asked!

Width of hall is 130cm where unit will start widening gradually to 160cm at end near bottom of stairs. So hall width remaining will be 90cm to 120cm approx.

Thanks, we already have coat hanging space near the door and another at the other end of the hall where it widens even more (see pic). It is a really big hall for a not so big house, so we want to maximise use of hall space for storage as we don't have much elsewhere in the rooms. We don't want a bench, we used to have one and nobody used it.

@JustAJokeLikeOnTopGear, do you think doors with handles might look less wardrobey?

OP posts:
Netcam · 02/05/2023 13:54

Maybe this gives a better picture of the space.

Remember the doors add width.
I think when we looked at the 38cm the sliding brackets and doors add 8cm. So it’s 46cm ( was then too wide for our behind door gap).

So if it’s 130cm wide hall, it’s 130-46cm. Only 84cm gap?

According to this:
What is the average width of a hallway? The average width considered adequate in space, accommodation, accessibility is a range between 42 and 48 inches (106.88-121.92 cm)..

I think 84cm width left is really tight.

Show about the ikea billy bookcase range with doors? They are narrower

@Caspianberg, thanks, we really want shelves and hanging space. We already have shoe storage. Also, we are all quite slim, including my teenage some. It was fine with that amount of width before with the other shelves that I have just moved upstairs. I did look at thr Billy Bookcases but they don't have hanging space or full length doors. I really want something fully enclosed.

And the 84cm would only be at one point as it gradually widens. We can all fit through 84cm width easily.

I'd go to store and look at the doors if I were you. Some look quite bedroom-y, especially the sliding.
You can have doors /handles any way you like. Or no handles and just push openers but I think the doors would get grubby a lot!

Netcam · 02/05/2023 14:44

Teenage sons, not some. The doors with hinges work out at 40cm depth, so maybe they would be better.

Re the hanging space, will everyone put their cost on a hanger every time? Wouldn't happen in my house - I'd just put hooks inside the wardrobe instead though.

User18546753 · 02/05/2023 14:49

We have Pax and couldn't get sliding doors for anything less than 150cm wide

DivorcedAndDelighted · 02/05/2023 14:53

I think you're on the right track with the Pax and it will make great use of the space. It will look a lot more built-in than a hallway unit so will disappear more, as you suggest. Ikea supply cabinet connector bolts free to join 2 or more Pax units together so you don't need to worry about that. Re sliding vs hinged doors, will this be storage you're accessing Al the time or occasionally? How much of a pain will opening those doors be? If you don't need to have pushchairs etc in the hall then width will be less of an issue. Consider a mirror door to maximise light. Also look at the Circular Hub for cheap items & on Facebook marketplace etc for used options.

User18546753 · 02/05/2023 14:56

Just see you have 2x 100cm on pictures so sliding doors will work

DivorcedAndDelighted · 02/05/2023 14:57

Nb with Pax you can get the tallest units & if you decide to replace your other unit in future you can add another Pax unit on. I have attached coat hooks to one side of a Pax unit and that is useful extra storage. You said you want 1x 100cm unit but the pics look like 200cm units to me - is that just bc they were handy?

NBLarsen · 02/05/2023 15:07

Not what you've asked, but I would fit a row of hooks along the wall for coats, then also fit a smaller unit the other side of the stairs/bannister for bags and shoes. Or is there scope to go underneath the stairs?
You need clear access to the front door, for safety as much as anything else. Fitting a unit there will really reduce that space.

Netcam · 02/05/2023 15:10

@EdHelpPls, thanks for the reply. We already have 2 coat racks in the hall, one for the teens and the other for me and DH. This is for storage of my extra coats that I'm not wearing, so it is only really for me. Plus stuff like the iron, spare light bulbs etc on the shelves. And my many bags. So it won't be accessed much, only by me occasionally.

Thanks, we already have that and a shoe rack, they are all covered with plastic sheets or moved out of the way while I paint. There will still be 84cm min width, increasing to about 115cm. The opening to our kitchen door is 82cm, can't see why we need it any wider than that and in most places it will be wider.
